Benchmarks for Ubuntu and Windows?

Hi all, hope you can help.

Basically, I need to compare the peformance of Vista SP1 and Ubuntu 8.10. To make it a fair test, are there benchmark programs out there that will do graphics performance and other benchmarks and are available for both OSes?

My Googling skills have thus far failed me, so I'm counting on your expert advice :)

Edit: I could run Windows benchies under Wine in Linux, but how much would that distort the results?

I'm pretty sure that SuperPi has a linux version, that'd be worth checking out for pure cpu performance. Scheduling on linux 2.6 onwards is gonna help that significantly i'd say.

You can't compare them accurately.

There is a SuperPi for linux, but it's been compiled MUCH more carefully. As a result, Linux whoops Windows's ass.

Thanks all!

I have compared time taken to boot, time taken to compress a 1.03GB .rar, Super-Pi peformance and graphics performance. I realise that these aren't going to be a wholly fair comparison due to the different ways of compilation etc. but they should give a decent enough picture.

(Rather unsurprisingly, the only one Vista won in was OpenGL performance - due to driver differences?)

Somewhat out of date, but about 4 years ago, perhapps more, I benched UT on Linux (LFS), XP and 98, same level, same number of bots, same settings, results were approximately....

98: 100FPS
XP: 55FPS
LFS:195FPS

But, again, the bespoke compilation of LFS gives it an advantage.
