Bending bodywork

A parcel force driver has managed to hit my open car door as I was putting something in the boot, resulting in a nicely bent door.

The problem I have is the car needs MOTing by the end of the week and I can't get a replacement by then. I assume it wouldn't pass due to "dangerous body parts" so what would be the best way to temporary fix it without completely destroying the paint?

Will probably be ok as is, assuming there are no sharp edges sticking out. And if there are stick some gaffer tape over it.

The answer is don't worry about the paint, the door is fubar anyway. Just bend it back into shape as best as you can using whatever means you have available. It won't fail an MOT unless there are sharp edges.

That wont fail the MOT mate aslong as it opens and closes ok, but if it concerns you that much, get some molegrips or a lumphammer and a block of wood on it and tap it back down.

Warm it up a bit with a hot air gun/hair dryer & tap it back into shape using a flat headed hammer & a block of wood.

That'll teach you for leaving the door open! ;)

His fault though, can't you get a new door on his insurance?

By the end of the week? :s

Actually you do have a good point, why leave your door open on the roadside while you're putting stuff in the boot? Asking for trouble? Insurance could get messy if the van man says it was just left while you were doing stuff in the boot and the wind caught it.

If I park my car sideways across the road blocking all traffic, it still doesn't give anyone a valid excuse to drive into my car, no matter what a penis I am.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but if you were the van driver and thought you'd left enough room but the wind caught the door, surely that's the owners fault for not keeping his car secure?

True I probably should have shut the door but really it's his responsibility to not hit stationary objects! I'm going to try get hold of his boss who owns the van and try settle it in cash tomorrow.

edit: I'm sure that isn't what happened monkey_boy, hopefully he'll just admit his mistake

Get in touch within 24 hours of it happening and the boss will very likely sort it cash as there is a £3k insurance excess for all Parcel Force accident claims. However the accident has to be reported under company policy to the insurance company within 24 hours of it happening.
