Bent spark plug?

Hey all,

My girlfriend's brother has a 1.6 Zetec S Fiesta which recently it just completely seized up. I haven't personally looked at it so I couldn't tell you exactly what looks like what in the engine.

However, I do know that it won't crank over manually. It wouldn't bump start, the starter motor couldn't move the engine and there was plenty of oil and coolant.

He's been working on it today, checking various things and found this:

The bent one is apparently from piston 4, and the others are intact.

I have suggested checking the cambelt, but am not entirely sure what else he could check.

So could I have some suggestions please?

Thanks

If it was me by the sounds of it the engine has had it. I would get a engine off ebay then put that in there with fresh waterpump cbelt, plugs etc. Shouldn't take to long to do on the fiesta!

Alternatively just replace the plug first and see if it happens again, far cheaper and less labour intensive option.

Edit: missed the bit about the engine being seized.

This was the first thing I suggested when he said he seized up. And what he's actually doing is preparing to yank it out, but thought he would check a few things first, so if this is something simple, I think he would much prefer rather than changing the engine.

Yeah I guess thats an option but considering it's sezied I would say it's going to be way more cost effective to just chuck a new lump in there. Will it not turn over without any plugs in? Has he taken the cambelt cover off and had a look?

Check belts, get a torch down the hole, remove head.

If the engine won't even turn, it sounds terminal to me, but anyone can do the above just to have a look.

Will be a silly amount of labour to get that engine working again. Would be easier just to get a new lump as described above.

Would be interesting to find out the cause of seizure. If the belts fine, maybe an oil pump failure?

assuming you've taken all of the plugs out when trying to turn the engine over then I'd probably take the head off and see if you can spot anything obvious. If not then have a look on some Fiesta forums and see if they've got anything to add but otherwise it's a replace the engine jobby

Right. Just spoke to him. He says he can't crank the engine at all, wont move. Piston 4 is lower than piston 1, and piston 2 and 3 are in the right places. So it sounds like the crank or a rod, so most likely easier for him to just whip the engine out and replace. Thanks guys :)

Sump and head needs to come off - sounds like a rod has let go.
