Which of these DACs is best for the cost? Is the 7520 really worth twice as much as the 7510?

7520 £155
7510 £75

I'll be using it with computer, amp, speakers and Audigy2 ZS

It has the LM4562NA OPAMP upgrade. Dont know what the MCL5/6 thing is or ????????????? or 'win internet'

Maybe a drunk post?

The Caiman has the 4562NA opamps.
The standard 7520 has NE5532 opamps.

The MCL 5 / 6 mod is just a pair of capacitors which need one leg cutting each.

There are other upgrades but it requires more tinkering :)

Both good

I own both, the 7510 is a 6/4 version and the 7520 has a LM4562 + THS4032 upgrade on the opamps which make it sound amazing. I use it with some SR325i's and the detail they deliver is fantastic!

A slight hijack here..

Can anyone please explain the use of a DAC with a pc.
I am guessing you would use one to take the output from a soundcard and input it into the DAC, which then converts it to analogue, then into your stereo. I guess this means that the soundcard has a DAC of sorts already, so surely ones soundcard makes a big difference - I have an M-Audio 2497, which was always meant to be pretty good, and am soon to be linking my pc to the hifi. Would it be good to investigate DAC's ?

The M-Audio 2497 is indeed a good soundcard, and you would need an excellent external DAC to better it. The Caiman probably would, but there is no point in spending on a DAC if the following analogue replay chain is not of sufficiently high standard.

An external DAC with it's own power supply removes analogue audio circuits from the noisy environment of the PC case.

I would experiment with your 2497 before spending any money.

Another route is to use a wireless streamer which will need an external DAC connected by S/PDIF to raise it's standards (again, assuming your HiFi is up to it.)

Squeezebox and Apple's Airport Express are both popular - Sonus and others are more expensive. Apple make it difficult to use anything but iTunes. With a streamer your computer and HiFi can be in different rooms.

Labarum - thanks for the reply.
The hifi is all Naim, upgraded by Avondale audio, and if it helps, is way better than my previous Naim 52/supercap/250 etc, so it ought to be up to it !
The 2497 is currently out of use as there are no drivers for Windows 7 yet. The computer will be in the same room as the hifi.

I'll go take a look at the links you posted, and thanks again !

The Caiman is a good choice for you, then, but you may want to consider other options.

The Caiman works well using generic USB windows drivers - at least it does with XP and Vista.

Most of the time I am using a Squeezebox, but sometimes I use a direct USB connection - usually running Foobar with WASAPI or ASIO plugins for bit perfect streaming.
