Hi, I'm looking for a monitor with the ff spec:

  • 22-24"
  • IPS
  • <8ms response time i.e. to be used for a bit of gaming but not competitive.
  • Adjustable height stand (that should narrow down options - Dell?).
  • Built in speakers (preferable).
I've got an old flat panel Dell Monitor >10 yrs old, which is still going strong but is obviously outdated. I've no idea what its FPS, refresh rates etc are but will probably retard any modern computer game. So, I'm looking for a new monitor to complement my new system (Ryzen 1700x, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB etc).

Given the longevity of my old Dell monitor, I'm inclined to go for a new Dell model, but maybe I can be persuaded with an Asus, AOC if the spec looks right. Cheers.

No, I'd have to recommend sticking with Dell as well... never had a flawed 24" from them in ~10 units and they seem to last forever.

The only thing response times are likely to do in the older screen is produce ghosting. If you aren't seeing any, or what you have doesn't bother you, it could be harder than you think to find an upgrade that will feel like an upgrade. I still have a 2407 somewhere, and the only reason I don't use it is I needed to move to displayport. The 2412 I swapped it for (liberated from the office) is basically the same in all ways apart from having a worse colour gamut :/ For content production, that '07 was top notch.

Ohw... right, ok. Sorry, I didn't realise how far behind the curve you are :D Basically anything will be an upgrade, since you're suffering low contrast and silly resolution in addition to poor response times.

I'm a fan of Dell Ultrasharps such as https://www.overclockers.co.uk/dell...200-ips-widescreen-led-monitor-mo-08i-de.html because, basically, I have never had one with a problem ever. IMHO, 6ms response time is more than fine since at 60hz, each frame lasts 16.7ms. I also much prefer the 16:10 ratio, which gives you about the same height as a 27" 16:9.

It's a bit over your budget, but gets good reviews http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2415.htm and will probably last you for a good few years to come. Not sure that will be true if you come in at a lower price point, tbh... you get what you pay for :)

Alternatively, the cheaper equivalent is https://www.overclockers.co.uk/dell-p2417h-24-1920x1080-ips-widescreen-led-monitor-mo-08b-de.html - sacrifices the vertical pixels and a little colour accuracy, but still a thumbs up from TFT Central: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2417hj.htm

I ended up buying a AOC 23.6 inch IPS Monitor, HDMI, VGA, MHL, Vesa I2476VW.

I compared it to the old Dell and the images were clearer on the Dell! Can you believe it! A monitor from 2005 is better quality than one with the latest tech in 2016! Oh well, it's going back. I'm going to spend a bit extra and get a new Dell. After all I'm going to have to be looking at it for the next 5 years.

Yeah... I'll believe that. Not many around here have kind words for AOC :/ Be suspicious of screens that have neither DVI nor displayport... usually they're cheapo office fare.
