Me and my partner are having a quiet new years eve this year and I got to thinking if there may be some fun games we could play?

I ordered one called Forbidden Island that looks pretty cool

Forbidden island is fun for sure.

What kind of game do you fancy? Something co-op or vs? Do you have much space for a board?

Hey

I think we are fairly open to dip our toe in to any genre really, maybe not heavy strategy, I would like that but my partner not so much.

I grabbed forbidden island mainly as I thought Co op may help ease us in to board gaming together more so than trying to destroy eachother right away :D

Pandemic is a brilliant co-op game, my wife isn't huge into games but loves that. Get the Legacy version though.

If you aren't bothered about investing a bit more Zombicide (or Massive Darkness) are fun games but takes some hemebrewing to be at its best.

I find that Fantasy Flight make a bunch of really fun 2 player games:

If you have space - I wholeheartedly recommend Mansions of Madness

However if you are short on space, Fantasy Flight do a tonne of living card games which offer a good bit of fun (here are a couple of examples)!

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/254591/heroes-terrinoth - I've been playing this recently and it's a freakin blast

I also recmmend the following:

Jaipur
London
Hive!
Pandemic (legacy is more fun - but has Zero replaybily / you can;t sell it on as you scratch panels, use stickers etc)
Escape the Dark Castle

To begin with I recommend Carcassonne, Pandemic, Patchwork, Hive, Love Letter (Batman: Love Letter is my favorite).

If you are looking to get more games and chances are you will then I suggest feeling out what you both lean towards and away from.
For instance, my wife does not like space themed games, but likes fantasy themes. We have also found that we dont like long 'Euro' styled games (the term is worth looking into if you want to understand board games.

Wife and I love a good game of Carcasonne (with several expansions) and Agricola (full game and All creatures great and small).

She didn't like the idea of pandemic, I would like to play it though.

If you like them bigger, Claustrophobia is a very highly regarded dungeon crawl and Caylus (which also plays with 3-5) is amazing as a two-player game. If you don't mind a bit of wargaming there's also Commands and Colours series games. I personally prefer Ancients, but Napoleonics is well rated and on the lighter side Memoir '44, Battlelore and - if you can find it - Battles of Westeros use the same rule set.

A good place to find two-player games is Rahdo Runs Through on YouTube. Rahdo mostly plays games with his wife Jen, so he specialises in games that play well with only two.

As with every reviewer they tend to have a bias. Rahdo bias's Euros, The Dice Tower tend bias Ameritrash and abstracts (Zee), where as Shut Up and Sit Down bias party games.
