As the title suggests, I am casual gamer looking to replace my old LG 34UM88 with another 21:9 monitor.

I don't really play twitch games anymore ( certainly not competitively on any level ) and most of my time is spent with titles like Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, Fallout, Dishonored e.t.c, watching the odd movie or browsing.

I currently have an average/aging rig comprising a 4770k, 16GB and GTX 1080, but it will be updated at some point.

A friend recommended the Samsung C34F791 with another recommending the new Alienware AW3418DW which is quite a bit more expensive. I realise the Alienware has G-Sync to match my current GTX1080 and that the Samsung is Freesync based.

Which would you recommend and why, or is their another I should be considering?

If I chose the Samsung would I benefit from it's 100Hz or is that only available by hooking up an AMD card?

Regarding the Samsung you would get the 100hz. The thing with freesync screens is that even if they dont show up as whatever hz in your control panel you can always overclock them. It may differ from monitor to monitor how you should go about it(some should have freesync enabled to expose the desired hz/or be able to be OCed, others it doesn't matter). This is from experience with several freesync monitors on an nvidia enabled system and from information on the net. That said i would stay away from that specific samsung model. It has several issues. Is the reason for upgrading purely the 60hz limit on your screen? cause to my knowledge from owning several LG ultrawides(though not that specific model) and from reading other peoples posts that screen should be able to be OCed to 75hz pretty easy.

Thanks for the reply! I want to move up to 100Hz or above in readiness for upgrading the rest of my system.

Apparently I can add an AMD card to my system to fool the monitor into exposing the 75hz without frame skipping e.t.c, but I really can't be bothered messing around, and thought I'd get a new monitor that will just work.

I take it you have already tried to overclock it over DP on your nvidia gpu?

As I said, I can't be bothered fiddling around with the LG for 25Hz.

I've taken a punt on the Alienware.

Thanks.

Thats fair enough however i think you underestimate how much of a difference those 25hz would do however small a difference it may sound like. Good luck with your Alienware :)

A friend ( the one who recommended the Dell ) has his overclocked to 75hz and if there is a difference I really struggle to see it, and I'm not getting any younger. However, with his new Alienware AW3418DW the difference is very clear, and the G-sync performance is truly awesome.

Thanks again, and I'll update this post once I've received it and had chance to use it for a while.

I think you made the right decision. A monitor usually far outlasts any component within a PC yet I've neglected it a lot in the past. With the prices of ultrawides seemingly never dropping, its a good investment too you won't regret.

Ultrawide is the only reason I'll think about disconnecting my PC from the 65'' 4k panny
