Which of these two hard drives are the best for under £100

Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB 5000AAKS SATA-II 16MB Cache

or

Samsung SpinPoint T HD501LJ 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache

Anyother suggestions welcome

Cheers JoeBoi

WD AAKS or you can try the seagate 7200.10 500gb and hope for the silent motor. Both uses the newer perpendicular recording technology afaik

Im in the same boat, filled my Seagate 320gb already.

I was gonna go for another Seagate as this 320gb is great, but now worried about noisy motor comments, have i been lucky with this one?

can someone elaborate on the "silent motor" statement here?

also, any further suggestions as i'm looking for a large 500Gb or so HD but it must be as quiet as possible?

thanks :)

I believe he's on about the two types of motors you can get with the seagates. There is a quiet one (usually indicated by pink glue I think?) and theres a louder one. Luck of the draw as to which one you get.

There is a big thread on it here :) :

Is there any suggestions for big Hdd's on ide interface? Not sure what to get really, i've used all my sata ports up, currently only use maxtor drives, but they are pretty loud.

To be honest I wouldn't buy a big IDE drive anymore. Intel have stopped providing IDE ports natively within their chipsets which is a clear sign that the end of the road is near for ATA133. You would be better off getting a big SATA drive to replace one of your existing ones and relegating the small one to an external enclosure for backups.

If, however, you do wish to go down the IDE route the same recommendations tend to hold true, there is very little difference in the electronics required to drive IDE and SATA disks so most models are available in both flavours still although the IDE ones tend to be a bit more expensive.

I would get a SATA drive and a SATA to IDE Adaptor... IDE drives are too old now, so its not much point getting those...

Or you could buy a SATA PCI card :)

I got some of those adaptor things with an Abit nforce2, I tried to use it to make an IDE drive run on an SATA port not so long ago and it didnt work. So they are for making Sata drives run on an IDE controller?

Abit serillel 2 its called.
