Best 750W PSU

Like I said in post 15 the Antec TruePower New 650W and 750W are worth a look at, as they are made by Seasonic who also make the Corsair HX650W and the Seasonic X-650 and X-750.

You could have been unlucky with the Be Quiet, mine has been fine.

I would go Corsair if you want to change but I do hope you get a replacement from Be Quiet.

my hx750 corsair failed within approx 1 month of normal use! It has been replaced now, but it just shows that paying for the quality doesn't necessarily guarantee your psu wont fail on you.

Thats why I got the Be Quiet. Thought it would last me for years.

+1 for ocz stealthxtreme.

I've used hundreds of them in builds for screen displays that go behind walls (no ventilation, very hot buildings - very harsh conditions for hardware).

Not one has failed.

  • Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping
  • Asus ATI Radeon HD 4890 1024MB GDDR5
  • Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R
  • OCZ Gold 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8
  • Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATA-II x2
  • Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer 7.1
I tried a few PSU calculator sites and they all said to go for at least 700w PSU. Even when I was getting suggestions on his forum for my pc build last year I was told to go for 700w

Hey Kev,

hope you don't mind me plopping this graphic in your thread (it was for a HD 5850 user but HD 4890 results are included) . . . . it's all well and good getting suggestions but I think you will find a lot of folks on our beloved forum tend to over estimate everything by a large degree . . . I would also tend to not take any PSU calculator as gospel as these also tend to overesitimate the power you need and help the manufacturers chalk up extra profits from sales for parts that are not really required! :p

I thought I might not need the extra power but the PSU calculators and the forum suggestions were the same so hence me buying a 750W PSU. I always said its better to have a bit of power to spare for future upgrading.

All I can say is that with the hx series, you get a grade power, but you pay for it. Having been on a right old mission silencing my rig though, I am very dissapointed with the fan.

The psu is not just cool, it is cold, the air out the back is same as air going in, and the fan on it is set to spin faster than necessary, when tried to isolate the noise on my psu and used a soft plastic stick to slow and stop the fan from the centre my pc's noise dropped massivley. If you have even one mildly noisy fan, I would recommend it without hesitation. If silence is very important to you though, would look at something else.

A 750 wattage power supply unit is a lot more than you need for your current system. A power supply such as the Corsair HX 650W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply is also quite a bit more than you need for your current system but it will give you a little breathing room for the future whilst not being overly excessive. :)

Well according to a PSU calculator I can run a 5870 and X4 Phenom on my 400w corsair PSU .. Which I'm sure isnt right?
