Hi

I recently got a new TV, it only has hdmi ports so I have no option for my retro consoles, I do aim to get a crt at some point.

I have a cheap hdmi converter but its not the best, anyone got any suggestions for a converter that will do a decent job for nes through to ps2

I use an OSSC with my retro consoles and computers (PS2, PC Engines, Dreamcast, Amiga etc). There’s no perceivable lag and it works perfectly. A perfect partner for the cables linked above. Check it out.

With this could I use the original cables to start with and then slowly build up with the better cables?

If you already have suitable cables, yes. I don’t know what the NES uses, but I bought specific RGB cables for my: PS2, PC Engines, Dreamcast etc.

edit - Ideally (but not in all cases) you want an RGB signal coming from your console and a suitable RGB cable (of the right sync type), normally with a scart connector. The OSSC will then happily output this to your tv via the HDMI port. It can except other signals but these are considered sub par to RGB.

it’s quite a lengthy subject and goes into far more detail that I have touched on. Google is your friend.

OSSC and RetroTink are the two best options IMO, unless you go down the route of HDMI mods to the consoles themselves. These are all moderately expensive to very expensive options however.

OSSC for VGA, component and RGB Scart.
RetroTink for composite, svideo and component.

Note the OSSC cannot handle composite over scart, so make sure your system output and current Scart cables are RGB.

The cheap converters may work, but your mileage may vary and they are definitely sub par quality. But they are much more affordable and you may be happy with the compromise.

Look at MyLifeInGaming on YouTube - they did a few nice videos on the various options :)

Beware the cheap ones, as they don't work that well. I got one off Amazon and it claimed to output PAL, but it wasn't a compliant PAL image as it was monochrome.
