Best alround Shuttle

ya can get away with setting the fan on low and still have great temps, with very little sound. i think the only thing you'd hear is the fan in the psu (60mm of some description)

all in all, pretty damn quiet :)

Sorry for jacking this thread, but the thermal paste....

Building a shuttle myself at end of week (SN25P), do I need thermal paste for my AMD3700 or does the stock cooling that comes with the Shuttle do the job? (I *won't* be overclocking)

you get a little packet of thermal paste with it, whether its any good or not i dont know??? ive always used AS5. i dont overclock anymore but still swear by AS5, it really is quality stuff. even if you dont overclock it should still knock a degree or 2 off ya temps once its been heated up and cooled down a few times

Yeah I've got a tube of AS5 at home somewhere so yup that'll be used if this overdue upgrade happens.. (Just spent £350 in Cardiff last weekend on a mates stag do)...

Was tempted to re-use my Sonata case, but think I'll still remain on the Shuttle route, had a concern about expanability space etc as I know it's limited on the Shuttle.

Got a 2nd Iiyama 17" TFT coming too (although now thinking I shouldn't have..) Perhaps should've just gone bigger from the outset.

The other thing I'm mulling getting rid of is my WD Raptor and just running on 1 160GB Samsung Spinpoint for the mo, would like to get another so I can do a RAID 1 strip etc. with my critical data being backed up via ntbackup to a USB based disk.... mmmm shame can't get a USB2 LTO2 tape drive ;)

Well I install the 3700+ into my new ST20G5 shuttle and at the moment haven't seen a fantasticly quick machine yet. At the moment I've put Windows x64 on it with the various drivers from shuttle. So I'll prob tinker around with it a bit more and then prob put my normal XP Pro back on. I only installed the trial x64 to have a look, nothing more nothing less.

The orginal plan for this system was for it to be the driving force for my VMWare sessions. I may dig out Half Life 2, but I've got to pay £10 to get the Steam account reset as it was given to me by a friend.

All in all not what I was expecting.. It's also running a dual TFT 17" IIyama E431-S set-up and again, I'm now tempted to get shot of both TFTs and just get a bigger one.

uninstall all the shuttle drivers right this second! :)

your a lot better off getting them of ati's webby

as for speed. i tihnk your problem here is xp64. when i used it on my SN85G4V3, i found it to be a fair bit slower than normal XP

also this is probs the first time that 32bit XP has actually been as stable as it is. definatly a decent OS now after 2 service packs and loads of other updates :)

Yeah I wasn't impressed with it.. I work for a microsoft gold partner and the general consensus around the office is that's crap, but I had to have a look for myself. It seems perfectly stable, but at the end of the day I'll be getting 32bit XP back on. I'll have a look at the the ATI site too for those drivers. I just used the shuttle ones just to get it running. Next on the list is Nero 7 for this lightscribe tech

SB65G2 or SB75G2, being older tech they're more readily avaliable second hand, theyre 865PE and 875P chipsets, so support socket 478 P4's which are also getting cheaper as they go out of fashion!

2 x DDR slots, 1xAGP, 1xPCI, 10/100 Ethernet, onboard 5.1 sound.

Theyre black, smaller than the newer P chassis shuttles (and look nicer in my opinion) and the 65 comes with onboard WiFi and passive northbridge cooling!

Im pimping them cos i used to have a 65 that i replaced with an Antec p180, and god do i miss its portability!!!!

I used Windows x64 with my Shuttles, and in my experience it's a helluva lot better for gaming (stability wise) and generally just nicer better than the 32 bit XP.

Agreed - my only gripe back in the day was no webcam drivers and no CD-ROM emulaters both of which are now available :) its all good far as im concerned :) I think this has to be the longest i've had my system installed, not re-installed windows for the best part of a year, previously id have been giving it a fresh install every 6 months or so :)
