Best AM3+ board?

cheers for the heads up, looks like another quality board.

You guys aren't making the decision easy for me :)

This may definitely be a game changer!

The right revision on this board and considering gigabyte is UK RMA, this might just be the droid you're looking for.

As long as no one is interested in the FX9370 or FX9590 then the Rev1.1 is spot on.

I linked it in post#15.

Well, i try out a lot of tehse 990fx boards and will say this to try and make the descicion easier:

If you are going to push the chip as far as you can, go for the Sabertooth. It will give the most stable power delivery and has really nice bios for overclocking and i would say it is slightly easier to play around with if you are trying to hit CPU limits due to teh extra features.

If you are doing a moderate overclock to something like 4.8GHz, go for the UD5. It is still a quality board and will delivery stable power if it is set to a reasonable overclock voltage. The bios may not look as nice but it is still easy to use and the UK RMA is a huge bonus.

People have tried all sorts of BIOS tweaks and it's helped some people, not others. If you stick a fan on the VRMs the problem goes away - or if you have rev 4, with its much improved heatsinks + heatpipe.

Gigabyte's tech support simply said to me about rev 3 that the board will always throttle the CPU if the mosfets get too hot with higher clocked processors, which is true of every board. They won't do an RMA replacement on rev 3 to get rev 4 unfortunately. It's not worth the effort or risk in my view, when you can get a similarly priced Asus board that has given nobody any problems.

I've got nothing against Gigabyte, I have two of their Intel Z87 boards and am happy with them.

Thanks for all the info guys really appreciate it.

I've read a few reviews on the UD3, enough to put me off of it.

Decisions made, its going to be one of these 3 boards. I'll do some more digging around before making my final decision.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 AMD 990FX (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £158.99
1 x Gigabyte 990FXA-UD5 AMD 990FX (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £141.98
1 x Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0 AMD 970 (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £89.99
Total : £402.96 (includes shipping : £10.00).

The Sabertooth if you want the highest stable overclocks (but shop around).

The 970 if you want a decent 4.5-4.7GHz overclock and aren't worried about SLI.

The UD5 only if you prefer Gigabyte - it has nothing over the Sabertooth, which can be had for less money.

ive seen a sabertooth do great things when considering overclocking.

I know a few people that hit certain walls/limits on the asus M5 series mobos, usually vrm bound.

ive just decided im selling my fatality and getting a CHVF.. wont let me pass 1.65v without crapping out!

Dont you still get manufacturers warranty on B-Grades?

To be honest, i would only worry if it is a GPU or PSU. I think its quite rare to have a CPU or motherboard decide to crap out after three months. Usually they either work or they dont, for me.

Not sure about manufacturer warranty. As long as it had the IO plate I'd consider it, but shopping around you can get the board new for not a huge amount more.

ive seen a few CHVF sold second hand but are brandnew for around £100

and you can get the asus warranty with proof of purchase, which they had.

unfortunately I never have spare cash when I see them :(
