Hi all,

Finally got around to installing my Sapphire 5850 Extreme!

Now I know that both Green and Red sides have driver issues from time to time. Sometimes each release a driver that tends to cause more problems than it solves.

So my question is, which is the latest best AMD driver release? Am I ok just getting the newest ones (11.8 I think)?

I have a 6870 and use the 11.8, haven't had any issues at all :) Go for it - if you have problems you can always try and older driver.
 
I guess that AMD's new driver for this month (11.9) will be out tomorrow as they seem to release them on a wednesday and the month is coming to an end anyway so they have to get them out on/before the 30th. I am hoping they have been testing Battlefield 3 with the 11.9's to make sure it's nice and smooooooth. :D

It's not for BF3, I just thought it'd be best to get the up to date drivers (I used the ones on the DVD as I'd forgotten to pre-download any) but didn't want to pick up a bad driver and then blame the card for being rubbish.

Sounds like i'm safe to go to the 11.8 ones though. I'll give the 11.9 ones a bit of time and see what the community reaction is.
 
hey man just a heads up might not happen to every one,but the most stable drivers i have found is 11.3 - 11.4. im using 11.3 for project reality 11.5 + and i get the horrid driver has recovered *****

If your on 6 series card then they maybe, but for 5 series owners, drivers below the 11.5s had issues that effected more people than normal for bugs.

The lagging mouse pointer when move around in the top right corner of the screen.

The 100% continued GPU usage bug that would kick off randomly.

11.8 have been faultless for me on a single 5850 and just as good on CF 5850s (actually discovered I had been running 11.8 preview drivers when I installed the second 5850 :))
 
It's starting to sound a bit like pot luck. Bit late now, I've installed the 11.8 drivers.
Well hopefully the 11.9 ones will be out soon (unless they go straight to 11.10?) so can try them if I get issues with 11.8.

I'm guessing with the 5000 series cards, once you find a decent driver you may as well stick with it as there wont be many improvement for them now will there? Just for the 6000 series cards?
 
11.10 (apparently) brings improvements for 5XXX and 5XXX CF systems in BF3. Just installed them now and the world didn't end yet. I'm really living dangerously lately after being on 10.6 or something for ages :)
