Highs and Lows of the World Cup so far?

For me, the opening game and win for South Africa :)
Great opening goal and celebration !

Quagliarella's second goal as Italy crashed out of the World Cup.

The South American teams have played some really entertaining football as well.

Oh and that man with a pot on his head :D

Low points;

Rooney who was awful, Torres and Ronaldo who seem to be trying to impersonate Rooney.

England's pathetic attempt in general, and hype that the media harped on about.

Mr Crapello.

John Terry.

ITV's coverage.

France and Italy. Who really disappointed me as I like them in terms of football, and they have some good players, but I'm kinda sad they didn't put up more of a fight. I'll admit I enjoyed the French revolution :D

Anyone else got any so far?

For me:

BEST
USA's injury time goal versus Algeria to qualify for the last 16.

WORST
Generally poor officiating and a lack of consistency between referees.

France have been the biggest disappointment for me. It's not appropriate to act in such a way at any level of competitive football, never mind at the World Cup. Doesn't matter who's fault it is. The FFA, Domenech or the players.

The best so far I have to say Germany beating England. I knew it would happen, most people knew it would happen. We shouldn't even have been in the last 16. Watching as a neutral, I bet that was an awesome game to watch.

However, I do live in England and I did want them to do well but it wasn't going to happen with Capello in charge and the team he selected.

People need to stop slating Capello. He's the best manager England has had in ages, and yet the English feel content to ignore how mediocre the players really are. I share my bemusement at his incomprehensible fascination with Heskey but everything else is down to the players being distinctly average on the world stage. I don't think you all realize just how lucky you are that Capello wants to keep the job.

Worst moment of the world cup for me: the officials. I think there's been three or four who's been told they are not officiating any further matches because they sucked balls.

I don't want to take this off topic in regards to Capello, but I feel he's made bad decisions and hasn't managed to build a system to use the best of the players, regardless of how poorly the players have performed, his system imo, wasn't the right one.

Howard Webb has had a good World Cup! Anyone know who's got the final ?

He's a good manager when things are going his way. If we need to chase a game then he just turns into a gibbering wreck and doesn't know what he's doing.

For example, changing like for like players which won't do any good and keeping the same formation which clearly doesn't work.

For me the worst has been The Brazil Ivory Coast game where Kaka was sent off for doing absolutely nothing wrong...that Keita fella or whatever his name is definitely deserves an Oscar for that performance. Even the Spain and Portugal match where Cap de Villa went down after probably the slightest of touches is another oscar winning performance.

Best moments for me have been seeing the Brazilians get better and better while the WC goes on....some of the stunning goals ie Villa's against Honduras and Robbens stood out for me...the French getting knocked out bottom of their group:p...and last but not least seeing Maradona's celebrations whenever they score a goal....

Pretty similar to yours really. Not in order :

High :

*The refuse to bow down attitude shown by some of the smaller teams, particularly e.g. New Zealand, Slovakia, Ghana, USA etc. that made it hard for some of the much higher
ranked teams.

*Some of the floaty goals scored that were blatantly a product of the new ball. The Italian 2nd goal, I'm sure there was one more.

*The emergence of a few unknown players as is common in a summer knockout tournament, Honda for one example.

*The good progress by some intelligent sides from S America. All are enjoyable to watch though a bit heavy on the cheeky play.

*The stadiums built in SA, three of them look fantastic.

*The loss of Italy. I have to say I enjoyed seeing them go. Not for the fact they were defending champions, but they're a big simulating side.

*The same goes for Portugal as well. They got a bit of their own medicine yesterday which was delightful.

Low

*The Vuvezelas, my god they're annoying. The seeming inability of the channels to block them out as well.

*The new ball had caused a lot of problems, but teams either had the chance or should have adjusted to it. If they didn't? Tough, it got irritating when teams whimpered about it.

*The altitude being used to an excuse as well.

*France and their problems. Frankly embarrassing for them and the sport. Good bye.

*Capello being slated. I don't know with the media and the attitude of the fans in this country why anybody would take that job. Money's a good incentive and probably the only reason why anybody will, this of course is used against the manager when he invariably fails.

*Our players, thanks a lot for not really being bothered. Nice for those that traveled down there.

*The sheer mentalism our fans display, I'm sure other countries' fans aren't like this.

*The amount of simulation going on, I suppose that's everywhere in football today. It really was something when the Ivory Coast got Kaka sent off. Not for the fact that Brazil do their fair share, but it's something of a dirty habit that spreads to sides who were previously not really known for it.

*The realisation today the reason why I probably keep losing my sodding WC bets. I have less enthusiasm for international sides than domestic sides which is why I'm doing terrible. I don't really know the sides as well.

HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONK. Hopefully we never see them again after this world cup.

Maradona being absolutely mental in a good way.

Heinze getting smashed by the camera, brilliant.

Low quality of goals, usually we see 30 yard rockets all the time and moments of sublime skill but hardly any to speak about.

Great players not turning up - Rooney, Torres and Ronaldo.

ITV, Adrian Chiles dear god.

ITV's coverage.

agree with all your points, but that one is too true! :D

Good
*Some generally insightful and tastefully done reflection on apartheid south africa. Though there has been rather a lot of it.
*Diego Maradona - I was brought up to hate the cheating little ****, but he is very entertaining to watch, and he's led Argentina well at these finals so far.
*Ghana flying the flag for Africa

Some other bad things people haven't mentioned (people had most of them covered, and I agree with previous posters):
*The asinine way our media has to be sensationalist and over-the-top about everything; the worst instance being the near-insane levels of support for Howard Webb now we have been eliminated. They will be panning him again come August, no worries...
*Franz Beckenbauer (and again our idiot media for continuing to go to him for quotes). Just shuttup, no-one cares.
*Gary Lineker and Adrian Chiles getting embroiled in the most internecine war ever to see who can use the WORST pun in closing the TV coverage of a game.
*Fernando's haircut. No flowing blonde locks?! He just got downgraded to an 8. ;)
*Jurgen Klinsmann. Last night he had the temerity to question Capdevila's antics in getting Costa sent off in the Spain v Portugal game. Did he dive Jurgen? Did he? I wonder who started that ******* trend? ****. And he has a stupid voice. He can shuttup too.
*Spain not playing Cesc. booo hisss. Get rid of Alonso innit.
*The Fifa Anthem. DUHHH DER-DER-DER DUHHHHH DER-DER-DUHHHHH....ARGH NOT AGAIN
*Sepp Blatter. The man is a giant walking scrotum of disappointment.
*Lots of empty seats

I have every sympathy for the French players, and I know not many do.

The French are reaping what the sowed when they gave charge of the national team to a superstitious horoscope-believing retard, and put in place a contract for a new coach to take over after the world cup, but mystifyingly let the ousted coach continue for the finals!

I think Anelka had every right to tear into Domenech, the guy doesn't know what he's doing even slightly. What followed was ridiculous, but inevitable, and I can't imagine I would have done anything differently if I was one of the players.

The French do love a strike though eh... lols

I enjoyed seeing the revolution :p and their complete collapse :D

I just wish they'd have turned up and played football, they have some good players and could have done a lot better.

The Best

Me placing a tasty punt on Germany doing well while the bookies were slating their chances for being young and having no replacements for their injuries. :p

The Worst

Every pundit on our TV screens except Alan Hansen. Absolutely clueless, biased muppets that get just about everything wrong and haven't got a clue about any league other than the EPL. Infuriating.

My Mum has more of a clue than Andy ******* Townsend and Gareth Southgate and don't even get me started on Adrian Chiles' stupid baggies face...

I found it highly amusing after England failure how every pundit looked so surprised but any "foreign" guest pundits in there were, "I thought you did better than expected" - further proof that its only the English that think we're any good. :p

Worst:

Constant embelishment of fouls/contact. have these people no shame?

this is embarrassing for the sport.

Forget goaline techology, someone just needs to add a rule so the ref can penalise players (even if they ARE fouled) for a Minor or Major Embelishment call. Minor if they do a 3 spinarooney if they get tapped. and a Major for covering their face if they have not even been touched.

Best:?

argentina.

Ah yes, another thread in which we (Italy) get criticised for simulating when everyone and their dog is doing it and some (including Serbia, Portugal and Spain which should surprise nobody) are doing it even more than we do...which isn't exactly easy.

Highs include but aren't limited to:

-France's demise
-North Korea against Brazil
-Ghana
-Diego Maradona

Lows:

-Marcello Lippi and Fabio Cannavaro (this was clear before the tournament even started)
-Almost every pundit bar Clarence Seedorf - nobody else appears to know what they're talking about if the players involved aren't a) English, b) based in England or c) playing for Barcelona.
-ITV...but its to be expected.
-The incessant diving and acting.
-Jurgen Klinsmann and the BBC's failure to mention the fact he was a diving **** in his day.
-Sepp Blatter

For me the best bit - as an England fan - was when England scored against Slovenia, I was sort of hoping this was the turning point which would see England actually starting to play, but alas it wasn't to be.

The worst bit, apart from watching England get totally humiliated by an average German side, has to be the vuvuzelas. I hope I never hear them again tbh, such an atmosphere killer.

All things considered, it's been a pretty forgettable world cup if I'm honest.

Good bits

possibly Marcel Desailly celebration after gharna scored here

Maradonas response to the affectin shown to his players here

Worst bits

England never turning up.
