Best android sms app

I just got a galaxy s6 and love it, but want to change the sms app as i noticed that if i send a smiley sometimes the text goes through as an mms instead of a sms. I just want something reliable and a clean layout so any suggestions would be great as i have just come from an iphone.

Probably get quite a few suggestions but here's mine that I've used, hard to choose between them but currently using hangouts.

I use Google's Messenger app. Before that, I used Hangouts once it started supporting SMS.

Google Messenger is a nice free one. Textra is my favourite but if you don't donate there will be ads after the trial period, but it's well worth it.

Using Textra at the moment, I have been an Alpha/Beta tester of QKSMS from the start which is by far the best imo, but theres a really annoying bug with it (the popup shows the last person who sms'd you, not the current one) and he doesnt seem to be able to fix it but not everyone suffers from it.

Until he fixes it, sticking with Textra
