:)

Its my birthday soon, and as always i've been asked what i fancy, which atm is the Advent Vega Android 2.2 Tablet, which has the Tegra2 cpu.

I can get a refurbised iPad from Apple for around just over £250 i think, it might of been the US one though, but as my phone is android i want to keep it consistent, and not have a different array of operating systems for my computer/phone/tablet etc.

My main question is; do you know of any tegra2 based tablets for around £200-£250 mark? As the Advent Vega is interesting.

Has to be around 9-10" screen size, fairly decent build quality, capacitive and multi-touch enabled and preferably Android 2.2/froyo :).

Are there any?

Thanks in advance as im working on projects all day :)

Well it's funny you should ask, i've just returned mine as it got very hot around the battery area, and also it's heavy to heavy to use for long periods.

The screen is also not great, unless you have it in the right place it looks ****, i also found 10.1" to big (and i have big hands)

Having said that for the price which is actually currently £199.99, i don't think there much better and of course you can hack the vega's with new ROM's.

Anyway just my 2p worth.

Cheers :).

Ive looked at reviews, and for the specs, there are believably some consequences or compromises as a better word which are now shown. Those which you have stated, along with the unresponsive outer edge of the screen at times, which is also slightly annoying, which the reviews said, as well as the screen viewing angles. I would generally have it facing me at all times, as i would be using it, or it would sit on my desk, facing me as well so that doesnt bother me.

It seems the iPad that was on AppleUS is now out of stock, or probably was yesterday as the low price $349.99 :o refurbished though, but same warranty as new iPad :).

Will keeps my eyes peeled for more reviews etc, but i might go for it depending on other peoples views and thoughts on here.

Thanks for your reply :).

If you can stretch to £250 or so the Galaxy Tab is a much better size (in my opinion) and has a much better screen than the Vega.

Edit: I've completely ignored your criteria though ;)

:), i fancy something larger than the galaxy tab, and something with Tegra2/a Dual Core processor, im unsure which the Galaxy Tab has though.

With tablets it really is pay your money take your choice, the more you spend the better the quality of what you get.

The Vega is good for the price, but you are by no means getting a polished product, whereas for £300 you have more options amongst the admittedly smaller 7" tablets but they are superior in every other way.

Personally I looked at the Vega but wasn't happy with the trade offs that had been made with the screen and the button placement.

For £200 you'll only get the Vega that matches your requirements.

But be advised the screen is shockingly rubbish.

Go in to the shop and have a go.

If i were to have £300 to spend on a tablet, what would be available which the specs posted in the OP still standing?;

8-10" screen
slick design
capacitive touch screen/multi-touch support

Thanks :)

You could get this:

Acer Aspire ICONIA TAB A100 7 inch Tablet (Tegra 250 Dual cortex A9, 512MB RAM, 8GB HDD, Bluetooth, Wireless, Android v3.0 Honeycomb)

The only compromise is screen size, but it is Tegra 2, capacitive with a good screen.

Honeycomb too :), design is slightly not wanted, wanted something square based like iPad or Vega, but then again, i would compromise for the screen size and have that android 3.0 :)

Thanks.

I've had a Vega for about 2 months now.

Out of the box it's pretty shocking, you definitely need a custom ROM on it, I'm currently running the Modaco R8 ROM which is fantastic. I've not tried CM7 but from what I've read a tablet optimised version has been released recently.

The screen is pretty poor for viewing angles but mines always displayed a crisp and sharp image.

I bought mine for a bit of light web surfing, the odd game and to watch movies on when I travel and it does all these pretty well once you've set it up to do so. (I keep telling myself this but really I was bored one weekend and wanted a new gadget!)

Make no mistake, there are better tablets out there but at it's price you're pretty limited in choice, if you're happy to mod it and spend some time configuring it and can live with the poor viewing angles it's a decent bit of kit for the price.

I'll probably sell mine in a couple of month and get a Transformer though for some Honeycomb goodness! :)

Looking at the Transformer, with the keyboard dock, it looks brilliant :) however if i were to spend up anda bofe £400 on a tablet, id rather use that to upgrade/buy a new pc for university, i just want something handy and portable for everyday use, travelling, surfing the web, emails and facebook/ocuk :).

When i have spare time, hopefully in the next few weeks ill go to my local purple store and see what tablets they have to offer and have a little tinker :). Wanting something larger than a 7inch tablet, but if i see the Acer Aspire A100, and have a play with it, it might sway me more toward a smaller device as its better built, has better reviews, and has honeycomb with a tegra2 cpu :)

The Vega's screen is pretty horrid imho. It's well worth 200 quid through, and you need to put a custom Rom on, and a app so you can have a home button on screen. Me I can live with it.... just about, but the asus transformer is way better , but considerably more. Pay more I'd say.

You can't compare the Transformer screen with the Vega, it's like comparing a bar of Platinum to a bar of lead, ones nice and the other....well....isn't

Think i might go with the Vega, unless something comes up in the next few weeks or so which catches my eye, however if i see myself with around £400 in total "i might" consider the transformer or depending on pricing of components i might shift to build a new gaming pc :).

I wil most likely pop into purple store or grab a curry to have a play about with the Vega, and on the modaco forums people have said if there are any screen response issues to send them back for a refund/replacement as quite a few have had no response to touch at the bottom part of the screen? And i will most likely stick a modaco rom on it :)

The Vega is on offer at the moment @ £199

Yup, i noticed that :), hopefully it doesnt increase in the next 2 weeks, i will look at the purple website now as sometimes they give dates on prices (from ....until... etc)

:)

EDIT: Sadly not for the Vega it appears, i will drop them an email soon :)
