Personally really like the G Pad, with a 8.3" screen you get a decent mix between small tablet and screen size and the build is really nice. Finally with GPE you can easily get stock Android if you want it.
which is a tiny device that plugs into your nexus 7(and other android devices) which allows u to read, write and transfer/manage files on your device) sells for $12
if unrooted u need the nexus media importer app £2.60 i believe.
u can also but a cable for about £2 that allows u to use usb sticks (with the same program) and also plug in a xbox 360 controller if u so wish
hope this helps
Living with the newest Nexus 7 over the last few months. Takes a little to get use to, but you're probably not going to find better for the price.
Storage I admit could be an issue (But then, most people use them for browsing/email and streaming on Netflix) - Enough for a 720p season of most seasons, it's like anything I guess. More you spend, more you get (64Gb iirc is out now?)
I had a nexus 7 2013 and it was gorgeous, but i wanted a bigger screen as it really doesnt offer much real estate over a phone. So i have returned it and have a gpad on the way, also has an sd card slot.
Had a play with a toshiba excite pro recent that at a casual glance seemed like a pretty impressive bit of kit for the price - dunno how they are widely regarded through.
EDIT: General reviews don't seem too positive but the one I had a play with didn't seem to exhibit any of the issues mentioned - playing video on it didn't seem to heat it up unduly - but who knows.
