Just reformatted and now it looks like i cannot get AVG free anymore.

Whats the most affective AntiVirus and Firewall to use?
Dont mind paying as long as its fairly cheap.

NOD32 isn't that cheap but it's definitely worth it. It's really light on resources, nice to use and extremely reliable. Avast is meant to be pretty good as well if you want another free scanner.

Why cant u get AVG Free?

http://free.grisoft.com

or Avast! is also free for home use

http://www.avast.com/

Although I havent tried it, a lot of people in the security circles recomend Nod32!

Also run Spybot Search & Destroy along side it, with TeaTimer enabled

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

And then Ewido as well (still works after the 14 day trial, but you have to manually update)

www.ewido.net

Also you can always go crazy and download SpywareBlaster, which basically puts lots of bad websites in your blocked list for IE.

www.javacoolsoftware.com

And then for good measure put the MVPS hosts file on which adds loads of nasty sites to your hosts file and redirects them to localhost which means your PC cannot access the bad sites :)

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

All of the above are free too :)

p.s. Forgot to say you can also get something like zone alarm for a free firewall :) http://www.zonelabs.com/store/conte...sp?dc=12bms&ctry=GB&lang=en&lid=dbtopnav_zass

NOD32 is without doubt the best AV available. I have used it and comment through experience comparing it to Norton  (NEVER) AVG and Avast.
NOD32 should be called NOD 0.0000000000001
Very light very quick and very secure.

Personally having 2 gig resources are not an issue and at the time of a new HD instal i chose to go Totally free.
I use Avast whcih i just like the feel of. I have switched of all the auto BS so resource usage is pretty light. I am a habitual updater so no stress.
Avast updates well frequent and does a good job for me and i also use Ad aware and spybot very regularly. Twice a week to be honest.

Av's are a personal thing and you have to feel secure as well as be secure. Here a horror story and you crap yourself and switch :p After acting that way for years i am happy to settle with the one i like which is Avast.
So if you have to pay to feel secure about your AV or you are a resource junky or genuinely short of resources then go with NOD32. Otherwise Avast will do the job for Nowt. ;)

Edit.
I also use Ewido a new addition to my anti V arsenal.Great prog.

Avast all the way for me. Other options are AntiVir and AVG obviously.

The best paid for software is probably Kaspersky or NOD32 but I got a trojan that NOD32 missed and Avast nuked no troubles at all, never looked back since.

I personnally think its Mcafee, ive used it for ages.

The virus scan and fire wall is extremly good. I would highly reccomend it.

What more can i say? :)

If you want the best AV as in terms of protection then Kaspersky is the best in the business epecially when monthly stats are concerned.

NOD32 is not the best and stats show this. Yes it is low on resources and full scans takes a few minutes but thats about it. I've seen some various reviews commenting on NOD32's fast scanning and numerous flaws were highlighted which caused some concerns and reasons for the speed.

I'm a NOD32 user myself and a Kaspersky user but don't get caught up on this NOD32 bandwagon. Yes its good but not that bloody good.

If you want the best with the monthly test results to proove its the best then get Kaspersky.

kaspersky is the best at actually getting rid of virus's, nod32 is better than other but does it fatser, kasprsky is slow but better than nod32 .

Kaspersky, i chose it after doing a search on the net and at he time had best detection rate of all in a multiple test/review, somthing like 99.8% detection. It was a while ago so just guessing at the figure but must still be up thier.

Having been dealing with Viruses/spyware daily... im a nod32 fan, Mcafee and norton both do poor products but there pro versions are a lot better.... but they still have some simple flaws.

If nod32 is setup right and set to scan archives/all files it takes equaly as long as the best AV scanners and deletes more viruses/spyware also.

Kaspery ive tried few times and it seems to find plenty viruses, gonna delete this mcafee V10 pro edition and test that out for few days.

Clear to say even the Professional versions of norton/mcafee although better then the retail joe blogg editions there still similar in performance but better/easier updates and less resource hogging.

Lets see how kaspery 5.0 fairs out....

I recently switched to a product called Bullguard. Its an intergrated package and can be trialed for 60 days free. Has a good av engine, firewall, spam and online backup. They also run 24/7 online help so pretty good. I picked up a 12month retail on a buy now from the bay for about £12 delivered.

Just a couple of points:

Don't trust any Top Ten Reviews, they are just marketting articles.

Bullguard uses the Bitdefender engine, which is a good thing because Bitdefender is a very good antivirus product. :)

For Kaspersky users, use the extended database which by default isn't selected.

Also if you are going to try out Kaspersky, try their beta version of Kav6 as its a cracker compared to the present version 5.

I would be interested in a download link so that I can try it out, I have searched the site but can't find it, any chance?
