Hi Guys

What's the best backup software to uses with a SSD. Would Acronis be all right.

Thanks Guys
;)

If you use Win 7, the Backup and Restore function works ok, although it is quite basic, probably better off with Acronis True Image Home 2011 if you dont mind paying a few £s...

You might want to have a look at Macruim Reflect which is free...

Macrium is great, also cheaper (and less bloated) than Acronis if you want extra features such as incrementals etc.

Hi

Would i need to worry about alignment Using the windows one or Acronis. Or any of them for that matter.

Both Acronis and Macrium will replace the partition with the same alignment as it was saved as.

Not always the case with Acronis:

  • when doing restore operations that require partition tables to be re-created or modified (complete disk restore with partition resizing, restoring partitions onto unallocated space etc) the products will assume the default XP alignment which is the beginning of the second cylinder (63rd sector)
  • when restoring/cloning drives or partitions that do not involve partition creation or modification of its size, the product will keep the offset you originally had (either that within the image or that of the target partition)

However there are tools that can re-align a partition e.g. Paragon Alignment Tool which they often have available as a free download.

If your operating system is on the SSD just use Windows 7 to create a system image. It is simple to do, restore is painless and it works a treat.

Not played around with Windows 7, so using Home Premium disk can you format drive and then restore image from external hard drive?

Yup. Using the installation disk (repair your computer) or system recovery disk (option to make one when creating a system image) you can format the drive then restore the image from another drive, DVD/CD, USB flash and external drives.

I love acronis

I managed to image my single disk setup and transfer it to a raid array..wasn't expecting it to be able to do that
