best backup programme

ok, just got a wd mybook and want to back up my full laptop hdd (only 60gigs) which i then intend to wipe and reinstall everything and load the files back onto it, what would be the best programme to do this? i have nero or is there a better one i could download for free, i can't seem to find windows backup program :confused:

the files are saved as DAT files, what do i do with them then?

On your new install, you run the transfer wizard again to restore the data.
