Best Bang for Buck Gaming PC Build - £1500

When I say 4K gaming is expensive / luxury, I assume running at max settings.

That's different. As I said, not even a 2080 Ti can cope with max settings at 4K faced with the likes of RTX. Hell, a 2080 Ti can't do 144 Hz 1080p with RTX on. It might just about do VGA.

Not really, you're just being pedantic ha-ha. When someone asks for 'a 1080p gaming rig' do you spec a Nvidia 710 GPU to save money, cos they never said 'high/ultra settings'? :p

Of course if somone says they want to game @ 4K, you would expect high/ultra settings, not medium/some high and even then lucky to reach a good FPS, let alone with a 2060S ! :)

I would not expect ultra settings on modern games at 4k. The higher pixel density of most 4K displays means that many of the post-processing techniques are just not needed. And then there are the GPU-killers like RTX and Hairworks.

and even then lucky to reach a good FPS, let alone with a 2060S !

You would be surprised. I started gaming at 4K on a 780 Ti (much less powerful than a 2060) and generally managed a mix of High with some Medium settings.

Sorry mate do not agree at all... Have you not seen 4K benchmarks on a 2060S ? You average about 30-50 fps dependant on the game. To me that's not smooth sailing to game on.

When I say 4K gaming is expensive / luxury, I assume running at max settings. You could run it on a 2070S comfortable at mid-high settings or a 2080S at high/ultra settings, or even turning down some dependant if you want 60+ fps or not.

You kidding me? Portal 2 is from early 2011 and so you think 4K gaming is inexpensive? :D

The above aside, my angle is I'd always suggest 1440p high refresh rate gaming - much more enjoyable (and affordable/realistic) experience than going to 4K imo.

I completed witcher 3 4k/60fps. I also completed Rise of the tomb raider 4k/60fps my rtx 2080. dialled down a few settings like shadows but really very high fidelity.
the only game which crippled my 2080 was kingdom come deliverance. was in the 40s on near all ultra settings. sadly dialling down the settings made no difference at 4k.
it's also a horribly coded game. even on my 21:9 monitor, it feels clunky and just not smooth at 60-70fps. only at 70-80fps does it feel silky.

I think if ur getting a 2070S+, get an ultrawide high refresh rate.
Personally in regards to monitors, I just see 4k as massively redundant too, not just because of the performance cost but just how i'd much rather have extra FOV than higher pixel density (21:9/32:9).. and this pains me to say it, but I think I'd rather have 1440p RTX ON than 4k RTX off.

oh god that hurt to say it.

After taking in what people have said and also looking around at parts and researching etc, I have come up with the following: they are not all from OC some are from Scan due to price point so I haven’t linked the parts just incase it’s not the done thing. (Most are from OC though).

Like I have said originally...I’m no expert so if anyone sees any fundamental issues with the build please let me know. From the research I have done I think (hope) it does all work together.....if anyone would swap components for others please do say so and state why, I welcome all expert info.

Case- NZXT H500
Motherboard - Asus Rog Strix B450-F
Processor - AMD Ryzen 7 3800X
CPU Cooler - Deepcool Castle 240 RGB liquid cooler
Memory - 16GB Corsair Vengeance pro DDR4 3600mhz Ryzen tuned.
GPU - RTX 2080 Super
SSD - M.2 Samsung 970 Evo 1TB
HDD - to be added at a later date
PSU - EVGA Super Nova 850G1+

Coming in at £1779

Do all cables etc come with the parts or would any additional things need to be purchased to complete the build?

Case- NZXT H500
crap case for cooling

Motherboard - Asus Rog Strix B450-F
crap mobo with crap vrms with asus tax
also doesn't work out of box for ryzen 3000
and doesn't have cpu-less bios flash

Processor - AMD Ryzen 7 3800X
lousy price/perf when compared to the 3700x

CPU Cooler - Deepcool Castle 240 RGB liquid cooler
meh. not sure how warranty would work if it breaks and drenches your system. at least if you get a corsair and silverstone (idk about nzxt) they will compensate you for the cost of the components the aio takes out.

Memory - 16GB Corsair Vengeance pro DDR4 3600mhz Ryzen tuned.
overpriced ram

GPU - RTX 2080 Super
if you want to pay extra...price/perf ratio is firmly against the 2080 super...but your call

SSD - M.2 Samsung 970 Evo 1TB
overpriced nvme ssd

PSU - EVGA Super Nova 850G1+
not really needed for a single gpu system. 650w is sufficient

Ok, some good points there, I’ll look for a better case, Motherboard, 650psu and cpu cooler. Appreciate the feedback.

As for the other parts..... ‘overpriced’ really isn’t an argument if your not paying the bill lol, but I take on board what your getting at. Cheers.

I’m off to hunt for the above....I shall be back

With that budget I'd go for something like this:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,519.91 (includes shipping: £0.00)

1. I don't see the point in going for the 3800x over the 3700x.
2. Better motherboard than the one you listed with support for the new AMD processors out of the box.
3. Great PSU currently on sale.
4. The case has great airflow.
5. HSF is extremely difficult to beat for the price.
5. Cheaper SSD but frankly for your usage you wont notice the difference between it and a more expensive/faster model.

There's leeway for brand preference on the GPU (I wouldn't personally go for a 2080s, it isn't a great option considering how much it costs) and some other components, such as opting for 3600 ram over 3200.

Great stuff!! Appreciate the advise on other parts. Such a helpful group, so glad I came here for help!.....I really really needed it.
Thanks all

seeing as you're sourcing parts from mutiple retailers...this would be my performance build...

ryzen 3700x
scythe mugen 5 rev b
msi b450 tomahawk max
crucial ballistix LT 3200c16 2x8gb
zotac rtx 2080 amp edition (non-super)
sabrent rocket 1tb nvme ssd
phanteks p350x case
corsair rm650 gold modular psu
2x arctic cooling p14 pwm pst fans

clearly not all parts sold on ocuk (and some parts are cheaper when sourced elsewhere other than ocuk)

Awesome info as always! And thanks for the new build spec and GPU stats,l. Hopefully I’ll have all parts finalised soon and a machine built, can’t wait much longer.....I’m itching to get going.
