First things first: potential for innuendo in this thread is way off the scale. I encourage it as much as possible.

I like a bit of greasy sausage on a Saturday morning, I'm just that sort of a guy. Trouble is, the only bangers I can get are in the supermarket because there's no butcher locally. So I'm looking for a nice supermarket sausage to go in my fry-up at the weekend. Any recommendations?

I've gone through Sainsburys dire selection with the following results:

Basics range: lets not go there.

Richmond: these are just disgusting. So fatty and the contents are just pink paste that doesn't change colour when you cook it.

British Pork (standard) range: a bit too fatty and a bit too much like gristle etc ground-up into a fine paste.

Butcher's Choice: as per above but slightly coarser texture and still too fatty.

Taste The Difference (?): Way too dry. The meat content is too high for a fry-up and they dry out no matter what way you cook them. Great in a casserole though.

Black Farmer: these are ok but share the exact same packaging as the TTD range, so they make me suspicious. They're also quite processed in appearance.

Debbie & Andrew's Harrogate: can't remember what these were like but I think they were nearly the same as the Black Farmer ones.

Riverway Foods Cumberland Sausages: these were pretty grim. Complete opposite end of the scale to the TTD range; loaded with rusk and fat which induced nausea after eating.

Walls range: don't remember trying them recently, but I didn't like them much when I was a student.

I think I'm looking for that compromise middle-ground where the sausage has a decent amount of fat and rusk in it to hold some flavour, a good bit of texture and nice and fat.

Westaways Honey Roast all day long. I simply can't function on a Saturday morning without meat inside me (bacon and sausage!) and so far these are the best bar butchers sausages. :)
You might only find them in Tesco though.

Sainsburys TTD Chipolatas are my favourite 'off the shelf' sausage from that particular store, but I find there's usually more mileage in asking the nice man behind the Meat Counter for some sausage action and seeing if he's got something that brings a smile to my face.

Waitrose do a few lovely sausages from the Fish & Meat Counter; their Berkshire Breed, Hampshire Breed and Gloucester Old Spot are particular favourites. I think Sainsburys have a fairly decent selection too.

It has to be a plain pork sausage, not fond of flavoured sausages for breakfast and certainly not herby ones like Cumberland.

As to which brand. Usually just go ttd range. Not great, but better than the others.
Chipolatas are good, require less cooking and fairly plain.

Could always order meet online.

I think I need to get a smaller box, still got loads left from last month and another box turned up today.
I like their meet, but not their sausages.

I dont actually mind Richmond sausages, but they definitely aren't the best.

The nicest off-the-shelf sausages that I have found are the Asda Extra Special chipolata sausages. A really nice sausage as part of a fryup :)

Home made :p

Lamb shoulder, bread crumb, plenty of ground up chilli, fresh coriander, garlic, harissa and ras el hanout.

Or if you're wanting a porking then:

Pork butt, bread crumb, enough paprika to kill a small elephant, garlic, chilli, herbs.

You can even make the above without a sausage stuffer if you're happy to have skinless sausage. I prefer it skin-on personally, as otherwise the texture is too close to a kebab (which I like, but it's not something I want in a sausage).

Fantastic thread. Please keep me upto date with the best sausage action.

I love sausage, can't get enough. (Sausage casserole is probably my favourite 'standard' meal).

I remember when Morrisons used to sell a sausage called The Original London Banger. Sweet lord it was nice. Then all of a sudden, they stopped making them. Never found out why, but they probably went bust.

I quite like the M&S sausages. Pretty sure you get 8 for 99p, so cheap for marks'.

By the way, be careful when your talking about sausages as Walls have ears ;)

I don't envy anyone who has to buy there sausages from any supermarket. I have tried most of them and there all much of the same poor quality grade.

Thankfully I have a truely great butchers up the road from me, in Richard Bextons. He makes the best sausages I have ever eaten, There not full of crap and really tasty.

I will have to post a few pictures of them, as I have never seen a supermarket sausage ever increase in size like these do when you cook them ;)

So with those and his Maple Cured Bacon, home made Black Pudding and extra large eggs, breakfast has never been soo good.
