Best batteries?

Hi folks,

Need some double AAs for Hive TRVs. Would like to be lazy and use Amazon - thoughts?

Amazon basics will be ample for them. Eneloop pros are the best of the best, but you pay the price. And arguably not going to provide much of an improvement over the Amazon ones for your use case.

Sorry the other annoying thing is Govee thermometers that report via Bluetooth IIRC. The screen turns off after a while - these have Amazon Basics but have "only" lasted a year. Am I being unrealistic?

Rechargeable or alkaline?

Either way I don't think an annual an battery change or charge is too bad.

If looking for alkaline batteries, then Duracell industrial (previously called Procell) are the longest lasting that I've come across.
I'm not sure I've ever searched by material. What's the diff? Alkaline versus whatever?

Ikea "LADDA", the 1900 mAh* are basically Eneloops, and unlike many rechargeables are not slightly bigger than normal batteries.

At £5 for 4 you can't really go wrong

* the capacity is important, the 2450 mAh ones aren't the same

rechargeables only have the 1.2V though , versus 1.5v so you are only able to exploit some of their capacity - I thought TRV's were know to be sensitive to that, earlier thread

my honeywell thermostat is, and some of led torches;

recently went for some Varta Longlife power, after some research ( made in Germany .. but maybe thats only printing on the casing)

This is what I use.
With about 10 Trvs (2*AA) and 3 sensors (3*AAA) I have a lot of batteries.

Bought them all in an IKEA 3 for 2 offer.

What's really annoying? The 2400mAh ones don't fit. They are too fat for the terrible designed TRV housing!

Exactly the problem I was having with my Tado ones, and the 1900 mAh Ladda fit perfectly.

Have a few other devices with extremely tight tolerances which this has also helped with; Quest 2 controllers, microchip catflap, and some random camping lantern all don't fit the high capacity rechargeables :(

Worst thing.. The old tado Trvs.. (before rechargeable) fit the bigger batteries in!

Go figure!

So turns out I already had this thread in my brain and ended up buying Duracell Optimums in November 2022. The reason I thought I had an issue turned out to be something else... and all my TRVs are still reporting 100% (seems unlikely?):

Interestingly no one recommended Optimums tho!

Always had very good experience with energiser and duracell rechargables. I bought eneloop ones which are regarded as the best i think but see no difference

I've found duracells don't last as well as eneloops after a couple of years rotation and constant charging draining - ie, used for control pads, electric shaver, stuff like that.

If your'e just going to stick them in a thermostat or whatever and forget about them though, I doubt it really maters enough to care about, so just get cheaper rechargable ones, amazon basics, IKEA etc.
