Best blogging site/software?

I am wanting to set up a blog, but with so many different sites offering hosted blogs or blogging software how does one choose the best?

I need the blog to be easily indexable by googlebot and it's buddies, so which is best?

I have my own hosting so a hosted site is not important, but if it is the best way I shall do that!

WordPress - The best a geek can get™

You can host your own or use their hosted service. I'd recommend hosting your own, though.

as far as software I have heard lots of good things about Wordpress, lots of extensions availible etc.

Wordpress is the answer you're likely to get from most people. I'm also a fan of Textpattern.

Whether it's optimised for search engines depends on the template/markup you use to display your blog and how well the content is written.

I've used that too, and I like it. I'd have to say that WordPress is more user friendly in terms of writing, formating and publishing articles/entries, though.

True. I guess that's largely down to the fact Wordpress is focused as a blogging application, while Textpattern is more generic in its potential use. Personally I find Textpattern's way of managing things to make much more sense than Wordpress, especially with templating - though that could just be down to more familiarity with Textpattern.
