Hi all,

Whats the best budget X2 CPU?

I want to upgrade but am confused which one to chose.

Would the 4400+ with its 1mb cache and a nice overlcock be a good choice?

Does the 4600 - 6000 range offer anything better then a higher clock (i.e more cache or multi unlocks?)

Thanks

If it's socket AM2, the 3600 / 4000 Brisbane cores seem to hit 2.8-3.0ghz on a regular basis, as long as you have a decent motherboard. Not bad for a £50 cpu.

If you were considering buying the 4400+ new, you'd be better getting a half decent Am2 board / 3600+ Brisbane / 1-2gb DDR2 for £140-£160 rahter than £100 on skt 939 cpu imho.

It's what I should have done a few weeks ago, but I didn't think it through properly....

What spec are you running at the moment ?

if your lucky you can pick up a decent 3800 for a good price on a certain auction site. I recently got a 3800x2 brand new oem, overclocks to 2.8ghz no problem, checking stability atm. btw picked it up for £55.

what motherboard are you using mate?

Hmmm, thought there were still some good budget options on sk.939. I really dont want to move to AM2/C2D, i love my DFI Expert/1800xt setup. It does everything I need and I think upgrading the cpu (currently a 3000+ winnie @ 2.4) will make it perfect for me.

so is the x2 3800+ the best choice then?

Am i right in saying the 4000-6000 range (sk.939) offeres only better cache and multi unlocks?

How many multis are unlocked on the x2 3800, is it 512k cache?

X2 3800 is a 10x multi / 2x512 cache

X2 4200 is a 11x multi / 2x512 cache

Opteron 165 is a 9x multi / 2x1mb cache

Opteron 170 is a 10x multi / 2x1mb cache

The week / stepping info is the most important things to look out for when getting a chip for overclocking. Don't know about current X2 3800+'s, but current X2 4200+s which are rev E6 Toledo cores are doing 2.7-3.0ghz

Opterons will generally overclock better than X2's though as they are ' cherry picked ' from the production batch afaik.

Thanks for replys,

Im right in saying no Opterons are dual core right?

Aso when you say 'current X2 4200+s which are rev E6 Toledo cores are doing 2.7-3.0ghz', do you mean if you but from OCUK?

Opteron 165, 170, 175, 180, etc are dual cores.

I didn't get my X2 4200 from OcUK. I'd ask in that thread where the others bought theirs from.
