ok which do you guys prefer ??

wanting to get one for my flat at uni we have 6 people in it and i have a 8port unmanaged switch however we do want wireless i do have a netgear at home but ive messd on with a linksys and found that i do slightly prefer them more or is it just the funky colours i dunno but please suggest me one ...... (60 squids tops)

You will be using Virgin Media's modem and an Ethernet router (no choice in the matter about the modem - you won't get connected otherwise)

As for a router, you want the Linksys WRT54GL if you are happy with 54g rates - then install either the 3-party firmware from DD-WRT or Tomato

If you want pre-N, then check out Linksys Info for all your enquiries (shows a list of supported routers for the firmwares) Sorry I cannot recommend you one as I went for devolo homeplug 200Mbs devices instead of wireless in the end (obv not for uni halls - that was back in '83)

Yeah, i got a WRT54GL with Tomato and it is absolutly fantastic. Top buy imo. Unless you want >54g speeds i'd deffinatly recommend it. 10/10 from me :)

(not that theres anything wrong with normal firmware, just tomato is seriously cool and fixes P2P max connections issue thingy)

be warned though, the latest models of the linksys WRT54 routers have less flash memmory then older versions, and so custom firmware may no longer still fit on the newer models.

since OCUK dont say what version they sell, theres no way to tell what sort of flash size yourll have when you buy the router. Unless you get it from a better site that does lable the routers with version numbers.
