Torn between a pair of Sennheiser HD650 and thre AKG k712 Pro atm, could anyone shed some light ? looking to upgrade my very old Dt150s

It can be subjective sometimes. We all pick up different things . I've got senn 598 /600 /700 , and I find the 598 better than the 600's . But my 700's are my main play :)

Go into a local main dealer if you have one and try a few out

well im basically just looking for the flattest more purest sound i can get. atm i dont have that chance, ive worked 12 days in a row so far so only have the luxury of reviews and ordering said pair on payday, its my understanding the hd650s are more neutral where as akg ar emore harsh and unforgiving in the detail

I had a pair of Focal Spirit Pro which were very good for critical listening but the build quality was a little suspect (imho) and they weren't very comfortable to wear over a long period, certainly not compared to the Beyerdynamics that I normally use.

That said the other day I auditioned a set of the Ultrasone Pro 900's. These were very surprising, and the closest 'sounds like a pair of speakers' headphone experience I've ever had. Well worth finding a dealer to see if you get on with them. :)

Beyer dynamic DT250 and DT150 are very neutral cans designed for studio use. Upgrading to hifi headphones will deviate away from a neutral sound. HD650's look quite good but HD600's are flatter. Do you need isolation from external noise and low leakage? (as both the cans you have picked are open backed)

Along with the above recommendations (especially the Focal Spirit Professional, I'm desperate to try a pair of them after the good reviews) consider the Shure SRH1540.

the dt150s are knackered, pads are taped on and the cables on its last legs, just thought id push the boat out a bit with a new pair but learning how the hds are so hifi, its put me off, im looking for really true sound. i thought id go for open back as it creates a better sound stage unless you can advise me any further ?

TBH, there's nothing really wrong with the sennheisers, they are very well regarded. (and if the issues of open back are not a concern, they are a great choice)

Beyer sell a full range of spare parts for the DT100/150's. I replaced the pads on my 100's with velour as I find them more comfortable. Up to you whether you prefer the £40 it costs to get the new parts to fix your current cans or the ~£250 for new cans.

IMO for reference use HD600>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>598, the 598 might be more enjoyable to listen to but thats another matter.
