Hi all,

I currently drive an 02 Focus ST170 and am looking to change because Im finding it too expensive to run. So, in your opinion, whats the best car I can get for around £5000?

I obviously am not expecting a supercar, but I think i should be able to get a niceish car for around that.

Any ideas?

I suppose Im after a hatchback, but open to ideas.

Cheers,

Edward

Why has it been expensive to run?

Bought a lemon?

Lead foot?

Or just general running costs and your being a tight wad?

When you say "best", what are you after ?

The ST170 can't cost that much to run surely. Work out how much you'll save getting a diesel and i doubt it's that much.

Or is there something inherently wrong with it ?

yeh, basically im feeling tight. Dont want to be spending all my money on the car.

I do about 300 miles a week to work and back, plus mileage at weekend, and the mileage on the ST is racking up. Want to change before it gets too high, just about to reach 70,000 miles.

Also, in the next few years the road tax for it is going through the roof because the emissions on the car are quite high.

But like someone said, not sure how much better a diesel would be for me, I think i still prefer a petrol.

It costs me about £45ish to fill a quarter of a tank, which can last anywhere between 230 - 280 miles.

So, with that kind of info, would anyone recommend anything for me?

Not sure what to look at really. Going to go and have a look around at the weekend, see how much things cost.

Cheers.

Id be checking you dont have a massive hole in your fuel tank.

£45 should nearly fill a focus!

Id hope you can get 300 to a tank of fuel if its ~50L thats 27mpg which is fairly poor really.

The road is not going to go 'through the roof' on a 2 litre Focus. It is also not costing you THAT much more than a diesel would be in fuel - especially with your rather average miles per month. It also won't explode because its done 70k miles.

What? So it costs you £180 to fill the tank on your focus? A full tank will cover 920 - 1120 miles? Have you got a custom fuel tank that takes up the whole boot or something?

It costs me £85 to fill up my transit van, which is about 70 litres I believe.

providing you meant it costs £45 to fill the whole tank and that lasts 230-280 miles, I'd say that's pretty normal for a petrol

edit: ok so 3/4 of a tank lasts 230-280 miles, that would be either ~25.35mpg average up to ~30.86mpg average...not that great, unless you're hoofing it everywhere

Sorry, I didn't see your comments on the money situation.

30mpg mixed sounds about right for an older or slightly heavier right foot with an st170.

If you would like to save money on fuel costs, perhaps consider a >'01 A4 1.9 TDi?

Save another grand, S4, simple.

He's struggling to afford / doesn't want to pay for a 2.0 Focus with only 170bhp....

You're suggesting paying out more on a 2.7 twin turbo with about 270bhp? Good thinking. I can see what you did there.
