Best card @ £130?

Friend's son's card died and I've been asked to source a new one at £130. He'll be using it for gaming so if you would be so kind as to recommend the maximum power at that price point I would more than appreciate it. Red or Green team is fine. :)

This AMD didn't seem bad for the outlay?

I purchased this card for a mate last week, for the money it's pretty good but as others have said there are more powerful cards out there for the cash. The main reason I went for this one is it only requires one 6 pin power cable, whereas the others need 2x6pin

Depends on the circumstances, if it was mine I'd be in the MM or looking at those b grade 7970s, but if it's got to be new a 270 or 760 is your best bet

I'll have another go with him later when he's at home. It's his Mother's money so he's making the decisions here. I don't get this "out of date" angle with him at all. He's not exactly spending a fortune and should cut his cloth accordingly, especially as he wants power. Buying a 960 is just wasting the money on a weaker card with some new/shiny tax on top.

Just to update: He's determined to get the 960 regardless so... :(

That decision will come back to haunt him a lot sooner than he thinks.

He's not having it. Says that they're "too old". I've told him that if he's determined to go current then he's getting less for his money but it's got to be recent and not "out of date". Stupid decision...

I'm guessing that he's going to be restricted to the cheapest 960 then? I'm not sure if AMD have had anything to to compete with that in the past 6 months?

Oh god, another of those "unless-its-the-latest-and-greatest-offering-its-not-worth-having" out with the old, in with new, types, theres enough of those in the Windows 10 thread...

I blame Apple myself. You've got to hand it to the marketing guru's, its genius.

What happened to all the 7970s? I was going to buy one to crossfire with my current one, and 10+ have gone in the space of 1 day?

Or maybe the 10+ in stock thing was wrong.....?

Hi :)

He's buying his 960 on Monday, but I came across Gibbo's AMD deal post just now and was wondering if there's any cards out of those that are any better?

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=27589756&postcount=104

They all fall comfortably into his 960 (I'll throw in the needed extra £20) budget and even at this late hour I'm up for staging an intervention. Doesn't hurt that they all look EXACTLY like his proposed MSI 960.

Any upgrades over the 960 to be had among them?

I'd personally say the 285 gaming edition is better than the 960...

edit: having had a quick google around, this doesn't seem to be the case looking at benchmarks, so I take that back :D

To be honest the 285 has the same issues and strengths as the 960, it just uses more power and costs about £20 less. The 280 is the better AMD option.

Maybe the 960 will just have to do, it's not a bad card just it should be £140.
