Best/Cheapest Vent/Mumble server?

Well.... that is some variation.

Makes me chuckle how voice quality is soo subjective.

Well, isn't that the whole purpose of voice communications?

No point having the fastest latency if the quality is ****.

Like I said in my post, Vent "sounds" better, as I have yet to find a way to set up mumble to sound better than Vent.

Mumble has less lag, sounds fine and the overlay works. Oh yeah it's also free.

This, even though I used Vent for a long time and had around 20-30 ping on normal servers there was a little delay from people talking, maybe half a second or so and Mumble does not have this. Also it has some excellent features like an overlay in games and a whole lot of customizable options. I'm converted i'll say that, and the server i'm using is free.

Thing is, Mumble's quality isn't awful, is it? In the mumble serrings, there are loads of options. Hit the 'advanced' button, and one of the options under 'audio input' is compression. There's two sliders, quality and audio per packet, both of which use different bandwidths in exchange for different audio quality.

Go on your SuperUser/admin account and right-click anywhere on the white chat window then hit 'Add' , there you go. :D

Mumble is the best app i've ever used, I'm sorry but people who say "I've been spoilt by vent/ts" are talking thro their back side.... if they've truly used mumble they'll know it kicks the living arse off vent. While Ts is a nice app its resource heavy and doesn't have that much features....

Mumble has so much its un-real:

* In game overlay
* Easy admin setup
* Ability to add user profiles i.e have a picture
* Ability to add pictures to rooms set up
* Will lower game/music volume when people talk
* Ultra low latency.
* Barely realise its running.

And i can go on.

Vent and TS are old news now, I've used all voice comms for a huge amount of time (1year ts / 2years vent) ....... Mumble must be good we get a min of 15 people on it a night!

Having tested Mumble vs Vent vs TS I have to agree with those saying Mumble is the best option. Rather than dismiss it I strongly suggest people go back and try it out again. You'll be pleasantly surprised :)

Don't forget in l4d and bc2 (among others) it has directional audio, so if someone is standing behind you in game in mumble they sound behind you so long as you all have it turned on.

That's generally caused by an issue with latency on the client end I thought?

No.

It can be very long lengths of time, normally once it happens while playing l4d it wont be "fixed" till the end of the round so a good 10-20 mins.

If it was latency then the in game voice/the game/probably their internet wouldn't work either with a 10 minute ping :p.

Aah, that explains it, kinda. Good that they know about it, I guess. Shame its taking so long to fix though.

Its fine off peak, but its useless at anytime you'd actually want to use it....

I just got a mumble server off Multiplay, 6months for about 3 quid, and 100% more reliable. :)

You can always set up your own Ventrilo server FOC, server files are available from their site, but you are limited to 8 slots only.

I pay £1.88 a month for a 10 slotter, from here, that's 16p a slot ex-vat. I cannot recall the server ever going down, it just seems to work.

True but i cba with that and Mumble is better. :)

...and for a ten slot mumble server @ MP its 55p a month!

Just a bit of a bump for those who are interested in getting voice servers as my mate's just renewed his server and gave me a heads-up on a good deal. Multiplay are having 50% off on all their voice servers (Mumble/Vent/TS3), you can get a 10 slot Mumble server for £6.60 for the whole year. Just over £6 for a year long Mumble server is a silly price imo, get it while you can.
