Can anyone recommend a quality Chinese restaurant please?

Looking to take the good lady out for her birthday on Saturday.

Preferably in Chinatown as she's always wanted to go but never had the opportunity.

Ta.

Everyone has their own favourites in Chinatown and I'm yet to meet a group of people who all have the same favourite.

I'd avoid Plum Valley though as it's so blimmin' expensive and the food's not all that wonderful.

What type of experience do you want? Also what meal will it be- luncheon or dinner as then you've got dim sum type places to throw into the mix.

The last two I went to were for dinner and was Golden Dragon- huge restaurant, pretty generic, have been going there on and off for many years, you'll get to have whatever you like there and the dim sum's not too bad. I wouldn't say it's special but in terms of chinese it's alright.

The previous was dumpling's legend- their xiao long bao (dumplings with soup in them) are very nice and their food's pretty good and again quite generic chinese food.

You'll get generic chinese food in most places on Gerrard St (I've been to an awful lot of them) and pretty bog standard atmosphere. When I go back, which will be this weekend I'll probably head to dumpling's legend with my mate. If I'm in a group I'll go to Golden Dragon.

I've heard out in Queensway is where some other good places are as well.

Golden Dragon is alright for dim sum, Lido used to be good but went bad after a refurb.

Four Seasons is best for roast duck and in recent times have gotten pretty good for their Roast and Crispy pork.

HK Diner is a good catch all but as it's name suggests is more a diner/cafe.

Wong Kei is an experience.

Also love Wong Kei's... always make a visit when in London. I just love the way they throw your plates at you! lol :D

Perhaps not the best place to take a lady on her birthday though!

Royal China Club is decent. Went there for Dim Sum on a Sunday lunchtime, mind the 15% service charge though!

Thanks chaps.

I'm pretty fussy but the missus will eat anything so I'll have to man up for the evening. She's always up for a laugh so Wong Kei or Golden Dragon it is :)

If you want upmarket, Yauatcha would be my shout every time. But it ain't in C-town.

I'll try Wong Kei on Sunday for lunch :)

Best Chinese food in chinatown - four seasons
Higher end Chinese food - royal china (not in Chinatown)

Best Chinese food within walking distance of Chinatown - yautcha (10 mins from Chinatown)
Best Chinese in London - take your pick from the hakkasans

Pretty much in price order lowest to highest. The top two will give you a more traditional Chinese restaurant experience. The bottom two are high end restaurants serving Chinese food with some modern twists so won't give you the 'Chinatown' experience.

Superb recommendations there.

Really GREAT food and liked the fact we were the only non-Chinese looking people there which I guess was what drew us to the place initially.

Best advice we were given was go to Chinatown and look where the 'locals' are eating - worked for us.

Back in the day  when I used to live in London, Queensway's Kam Tong and Hung Tao were very good, never had a bad meal from either. But now apparently Hung Tao is a noodle bar.

I wouldn't really look for the best Chinese in Chinatown to be honest.. I don't think many would. There is good cheap dim sum to be had.

My vote would be Pearl Liang at Paddington. That and Royal China seem to come top in most polls. PL is expensive, but the food is absolutely gorgeous.

I'd say I'm a Chinatown veteran and if its for your lady out for her birthday then you can go wrong with Four Seasons.

Couldn't agree more, I had the best Chinese ever in this place before seeing a comedy show. I wanted to know where I was going beforehand rather than taking a chance so went for the best reviewed restaurant on tripadvisor which led me to Joy King Lau. Lovely food and very reasonably priced. Can't wait to go back.
