Hi guys,

I just bought a Synology and am looking for a good and cost efficient cloud storage solution to safeguard my data. My requirements will be:

  • I need constant daily incremental backups with unlimited storage with a "pay for what you use" model.
  • I will likely be doing very few restores, probably only in an emergency situation such as accidental deletions or drive/NAS failure

I have been looking at:

-------------------

Crashplan https://www.google.ch/url?sa=t&rct=..._E92SkUxdPr1lDsashUnCQ&bvm=bv.146786187,d.ZGg

Seems to be cheap and popular with unlimited storage.

-------------------

Backblaze B2 https://www.backblaze.com/b2/

Very cheap, but your data is stored only in the US with no EU redundancy. Not ideal.

-------------------

Microsoft Azure https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/services/backup

More geared towards larger businesses, judging from the pricing and features.

-------------------

Amazon S3 / Glacier: https://aws.amazon.com/s3/pricing/

Cheap but simple. Designed for those who only rarely restore, but on the hand restores seem "glacially" slow.
-------------------

So, any advice on a suitable and flexible cloud backup for a NAS without paying too much would be most appreciated. :)

How much data do you want to backup? I just go for local HDD backups, but my upload speed is poor. ~25Mbps

If you have Amazon Prime, I can highly recommend Amazon Cloud Drive (Unlimited Storage) as it works really well with the Synology Cloud Sync feature. As I personally use a combo Hyper Backup and Cloud Sync to backup to Amazon and Onedrive. One drive is very slow though.

I guess minimum 2TB, rising as I get more stuff. I have Gigabit up/down fibre so speeds aren't a big issue.

EDIT - Just did a test and it was 58MB/s down and 45MB/s up.

Isn't that just for photos or videos?

Think you can do anything though it promotes pictures and videos, I've only used the free allowance I get with Amazon prime but I've a few non-media files on there.

You have two options with Amazon Cloud Drive:

1. As part of your Amazon Prime subs, you get unlimited storage for your photos and 5 GB on video and file data.

2. Another option they offer is for a extra £55 a year, its unlimited storage of photo, video and other data.

I have 19.5TB on amazon cloud drive, it works with more than just photos and videos.

From my fileserver (hosted in datacentre) with a commandline client ( http://rclone.org/ ) I can get over 900mbs upload to it with enough threads.
