Ok i'm sure this gets asked a lot, but it's always worth asking again in case any new cameras have recently come out! Basically it's not always practical to lug round an SLR (even if it's just my 30D with the 30mm F1.4, which is my standard light carry around).

So i'm interested in an alternative compact, something that's fairly small, but hopefully has reasonable ability in lower light and some decent manual options. No real need for a lot of zoom either.

So any suggestions, preferably for under £150? Maybe upto £200 though? :)

I've just ordered a Canon A590IS. Mainly for digiscoping use, but I'm hoping on doing a lot of walking / cycling this summer and sometimes taking my Pentax K100D + lenses is too much to carry!

G9 is probably the best compact out there at the moment. I sold mine as I can't do without a usable viewfinder but the results were very good.

I wouldnt pay 410 for a compact though, i wouldnt wana go above 250 myself.

But your wanting an DSLR equivelent so i can imagine you would want something like that.

What compacts can you get for around £200 that are decent?

You can get the G9 for £275 ;)

<£200

Ricoh Caplio R7/R8
Fuji F100FD
Used Canon G7
Canon A720 IS
Nikon p80 (over £200, but good all the same)

i've just sold my DSLR and purchased a canon G9 ,mainly due to the DSLR being to bulky to carry around and for my needs a compact does a good enough job, paid £275.00 :)

G9 looks a bit big, and a bit too pricey.

F100 is looking good though, will check it out :)

But he did mention a budget...

Yeah exactly. If I can stretch to £275, then I end up stretching to £325 etc.. and if I had that much money to spare i'd put it towards a new lens for my 30D. £200 is really the upper upper limit for a compact for me.

Plus the G9 does look a bit too large for the ultraportable type thing that i'm looking for. Will probably head down town today to see if they have any that I can have a play with :)

Slight bump :P

But I agree with the above comment, I use a G7 with a modified firmware, Allows it to shoot in RAW etc, Its practically the same as a G9.
