Best Compact?

Aparently the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 is *THE* best compact digital camera but the price is a bit high for my liking. The main thing I hate about cheap digital cameras is the smudgy appearance due to noise even at low ISO.

I've been having a look and the Fujifilm FinePix F60fd seems good for the money but also Canon IXUS 960 IS and Samsung NV30 which is the cheapest of all.

Has anyone got any recommendations?
 
Samsung make excellent compacts, I always use Samsung compacts when I'm not using my proper camera. I use the S850 atm, but I think it is discontinued, looks a bit like the NV30 though.

i disagree, i've got a two samsung nv3s in front of me. The noise on them is horrendous.

I would be looking more toward the Canon IXUS 960 IS.

btw, the best compact is the Canon Powershot G10.
 
If you like good noise performance go for an older Fuji F range camera. I got a F40fd for around £80 new to replace the superior F31fd that had a fall and it's one of the better performers for noise. No manual controls is the only thing that annoys me about it slightly.

Ps there is no such thing as a "Best Compact". All cameras except Fuji's are pretty rubbish for noise and otherwise the performance for general use on everything else seems fairly negligible with most cameras in my experience.
 
I think for low light the F31FD still sets the benchmark, with the older F30 just as good. There are still one or two of these still knocking about if you look hard enough.
 
Right guys, know it's a bit late in the day (having bought it today), however I got my missus a Canon PowerShot SX110 IS for xmas. Knowing little (to none) about cameras have I made an ok choice or is there better out there for the money. Retail £179.99, final price £149.99 with cash back.


Edit: Feel free to flame me for not doing the recon before i went and purchased it.:)
 
Yeah I've been reading other threads saying the same.
However, would the canon be a good intro to learning manual settings, i.e. apeture, exposure and all that malarky. Or do i go back to the shop, plead, pay the extra and sacrifice the manual settings.

Got the exchange, for the same price as the canon. Bloke in the shop could'nt believe why the TZ5 wasn't recommended to me and I can see why. Plus got a free snazzy leather case and an 8Gb memory stick for a fiver. Good times.:)
