What would you guys suggest would be the best console for a 6 & 9 yr old?

Was thinking a Wii might be ideal?

Or worth ponying up for an Xbox or something? I pay for the game pass on the pc as it is?

if you took your pass up to ultimate your account would get games on the xbox too.

It'd give them access to minecraft dungeons as a start

PS1. Reliable, tough, cheap console. With having a hughly varied and expansive list of games.

Whilst the Game Pass for xbox is great value, the initial console purchase is a big investment for kids who may not look after it.

So ultimately it would come down to cost if it were me.

Nintendo imo is neither cheap or as expansive in its games. But i could imagine the Wii or equivalent is fun for the right kids who like the dance, run, sport, hands-on type of gaming. But that'll depend on what your kids are like?

I’m actually shocked at the amount of young kids playing call of duty.... And the language is shocking. I don’t use a mic and a lot of the time I mute as it’s annoying as heck. My niece and nephew do have an Xbox tho , but it’s age limited .

Mine are 10 and 6, and we bought an xbox one for Xmas primarily for the older one, but the younger uses it too (a bit, just for roblox). Bought the ultimate game pass (for the next 2.5 years, thanks to the upgrade deal they offer on gold), but even the eldest spends most of his time on Roblox, which is free anyway :D

Eldest has two friends on xbox, only one on Switch, none on PS. Others only game on tablet or, one lad, on laptop. If lots of friends are on the same platform, best to join that imo, regardless of increasing cross-play

Previously had, still have, a PC set up to the living room TV with xbox controllers. Just the older one played that, from nearly-8 when I set it up. Games like Minecraft, Trine, Sonic Racing, Gauntlet, FTL, Injustice, Costume Quest.

That's been happening for as long as mainstream consoles have had robust online play, the 360 was horrendous for little kids screaming and shouting obscenities down mic at people, often while playing more adult orientated games.

@OP: What sorts of games do they want to play? When I was 7-8 I had my own consoles such as the Mega Drive and SNES because those are what interested me, I wouldn't have been overly happy if someone had bought me an Atari 2600. Granted those consoles were given to me because I asked for them for Christmas presents. Some kids today might be interested in retro stuff, but I imagine a lot would find a Playstation 1 (as suggested by someone else) pretty disappointing.

Switch is the default answer to this, but TBH, while it has great games and user experience does suit them...the PS4 has an amazing library with dirt cheap games. Games on the switch are very expensive, but hold their value, so up to you to figure out if you'll be selling them along after finishing.

I'd go for Xbox. Good library of kid-friendly games, especially if you take advantage of the current deals to be had for game pass. Plus, loads of settings on there to tailor the experience so they can only chat with friends, receive messages from them, etc. Plus, there's plenty of titles for them to grow into over time. :)

Most the comments here clearly dont have kids. Ps4 and xbox? Your mad! There are very little genuine kids friendly games on those platforms that can be scaled to the appropriate age range.

Switch has a lot of variety , games like animal crossing, you have labo and all that goes with that, the fit ring, the Mario's ( mario maker literally has age range themed worlds you can download) , mario kart ( which has assists including turning based on your children's ability) and all the pokemon games release to date.

Going on a long road trip? Or holiday? Take it with you for a few hours peace...you know those moments of silence that actually make a real difference when you have little ones.

I recommended the Switch based on having a PS4 (which is mine) which the kids use. :D

Cheers for the response guys.

In regards to looking after it, that wouldn't be an issue as it would be in the front room only and they'd only be able to use it while supervised. We only really have 1 TV in the house (our bedroom has one but it's never used)

From my research the switch seems the most logical choice but the outlay is a lot really. Will have to think about that one.

They both have fire tablets but the games her friends play are not age appropriate (Roblox was installed for a while but there was too many things which involved killing each other) which despite being the only types of games I play and the fact I hurt people for fun (mma/bjj) I'm also an adult and she's a child so doesn't need to be killing people her age.

I'm even struggling to find android games which aren't riddled with adverts or microtransactions which are always trying to get them to buy or subscribe to things.

Switch is sounding like the winner though. Mario kart would be ace as I can get involved too and I love that game.

I'd probably try to find out what their friends have and buy that. That way they can play online together and swap games.

I do like the switch but the cost of games is very high and titles like Mario/Zelda haven't really dropped in price even though they're years old now.

At least with Xbox you can pay £5-10 month for game pass and they'll never be stuck for something new to play.

Alternatively buy the console you want the most and claim it's for the kids.... :D

I tried to convince my lad that PS4 was where it's at, but he doesn't know anyone with one, and the less-supported cross-play meant I didn't feel right forcing it on him :D

Buy a ps5 instead:D. I'd say any Lego games, although both my kids love the goat simulator, and earth defence force games (3 and 6 years old).
