Best cooler for P3.2 S478?

Mattey1 - If you get temps like that, even with overclocking, then it should do my stock speed 3.2 fine, as iim not one to overclock unless there is a simple software program that does the changes for me.

Not sure why people dont recommend that one all the time. Whats the audible noise like though? They dont give a DB rating, which makes me suspicious that its not a quiet enough solution

That looks good to me. But what is the DB level of this cooler? I cant see an answer anywhere, so maybe its really loud and they dont want to admit this, until its too late?

Not sure if i was allowed to link the site i got this from so ill just post what it said on the page:

COMPARISON

Three competing products were chosen for comparison against the Vapochill Micro: A Thermalright XP-90 with a 92mm Nexus fan, the Arctic Cooling Freezer 4, and the venerable Zalman CNPS7000-AlCu. All of these fall roughly in the same price range, and they all use 92mm fans. For the Vapochill Micro and the Thermalright XP-90, the reference Nexus fan was used; the Freezer and Zalman heatsinks both use proprietary fans that cannot easily be swapped, so the stock fans were used. Data for the comparison comes from our reviews of the respective products, which are linked to above.

Two comparisons were done: One with the measured noise held close to 22 dBA@1m, and another at 17 dBA@1m. These are very quiet levels; the latter is effectively silent under most conditions.

hope that helps kinda, I really dont know why they rate the noise in sone instead of DB having a hard time trying to find a site which will tell DB without being compared to others.

I must add too i dont really notice how loud it is cause my case fans are pretty damn loud (vantec stealths).

Could it be true that the Thermalright there is better at cooling than the Zalman 7000cu? I wonder how it would fair against the 9500 variety?

Out of everything im tempted to try either the Thermalright 120 or the Arctic Freezer 4. Not sure what the quietest one is, or what other fans etc I will need to buy with it at the same time. I really need them in time for monday, so any quick advice would be nice :)

In terms of getting the Thermalright SI-120, will I need to buy any fans with it, or do I need to just buy that on its own? Anything I can buy from here would be a bonus ;-)

Want silence, Thermaltake sonic tower ;) ive got an 80mm nexus fan sanwiched in the middle of mine and i can feel virtually no heat what so ever from the heatsink. I can post some temps if you want

Its all over now. After everyone giving me some very helpful advice, I have decided on a Thermalright SI-120 heatsink with an Akasa 120mm fan.

Hopefully both of those together will make my machine a very cool system. As long as it keeps the stock settings cool & quiet, thats all that I ask for. Hopefully thats all I need, without the need for any case fans etc? Fingers crossed I have made the right choice, Will find out monday night

i use the freezer 4 on my p4 3.2ht 478 and i cant even hear it unlike the stock cooler that sounded like a vacum cleaner. once i fitted the freezer 4 i needed a quiet cooler for my gfx card (9600xt) wich i didnt even notice when i had the stock cooler on the cpu. i used artic cooling for that as well.
i found the freezer 4 easy to install. :p

I'm sure I will buy one of these soon, just for the laugh, they must have been out a year now? anyway I still think the Thermalright Si-120 is a great quality heatsink, very underated on these forums, but due to ease of fitting and its design it my fave right now :)

I hope it does work as well as people have been mentioning in the past & present, one of the things that made me choose it in the 1st place. As far as I know, if you team that Thermalright with an Akasa 120mm fan, it should all run almost silently and cool, all at the same time. Am I going mad or will this be a reality?

Can anyone say how these newer P4/s478 coolers compare to the Alpha Pal 8952 ?

I have one in my server now - it was cooling a 2.6 at 3ghz and is now on a 1.6 at 2.4 (stock volts)- but for some reason it doesn't appear to be any better in this setup than the retail 3ghz cooler I had on it before

I'm getting load temps of about 41'c.

I'd love to run it with a quieter fan as it is noticable - but these newer coolers might be better options.

Cheers
mj

Im sure that it runs quietly, but alas I will not find out that chance right now because the thermal cut-out never seemed to work as the chip fried itself, so need to find a 2-3 year old cpu, wish me luck! :(
