Best Corporate AV solution

went from Endpoint to Forefront, and it is way better, no where near the overhead on the clients, easy to roll out, and had no issues with it at all.

We switched from the impotent Trend AV to ESET NOD32. It was a pain to get rid of Trend, but NOD is picking up viruses Trend never even noticed. Admin control is ok, but I agree it could do with some better functionality.

We're currently in the process of moving from Symantec EndPoint to Sophos.
We found the management process of Sophos so much better - no requirement for "packages" is the way forward!

As for pricing.
We're currently being quoted £18.50 per head/per year (£55.50 per head) so long as we go for 3yrs of protection.

Sophos' pricing is extremely competitive (Very important to SMEs), agent deployment is quick and easy, and the agent controls are as granular as you need really.

The detection isn't as good as it should be though...

just dragged my quote out from end of last year. Got sophos & Puremessage for 2yrs, for 200 users, for under 5k. and that includes lifetime av updates. So can stop the support but still get the updates after 2yrs is up.

Anyone looked at VIPRE?

Yes, currently using it having moved to it in May following many years of Mcafee and EPO.

VIPRE is pretty good but not faultless. The console isn't anywhere near as advanced or capable as EPO for managing many clients, but the policies are easy to configure with wizards and the deployment generally works well.

Where VIPRE scores is on quality of detection and small footprint. It uses a miniscule amount of resources doing a quick scan which means the user barely notices something is happening when it scans. The odd thing though is that it uses LOADS of CPU at present when it updates, so I have it updating twice a day instead of the usual 4 times it was on. VIPRE support are in the process of streamlining the update process though so it will improve.

We paid £1000 for 50 users for 2 years (so £500 a year) and that includes maintenance and support. Mcafee wanted £1600 ish for 1 year, so it's a real bargain.

Overall I'd rate it a 7/10. Good but could be better. The thing is, I have confidence in it getting to 9/10 well within the next year.

The good news is that I won't have to deal with dodgy updates from Mcafee bringing machines to a screaming halt........ Mcafee support was sh***

Indeed, indeed. Something i've noticed in the 4-5 years of use over successive versions.

Quite a few times we've had to isolate an infected machine and install standalone (quite often free) AV solutions to remove certain viruses. Can't recall which off the top of my head, but certainly one was of a USB autorun variety.

I've used trend, it seemed to do its job well without interfering too much. Client/Server AV was fine but i found their Exchange/SMTP options a little annoying

Macafee i've never liked, and i hear they have now changed their server licensing to one that is based on the number of the servers users or something, involved in a project at work to remove Macafee from 350 of our client servers and replace with SEP. Even after the time the project will take to replace Macafee its still hugely cheaper than keeping it.. so i hear from the people in charge of the monay

SAV/SEP.. god i hate symantec products, SEP however isnt bad

Forefront, actually a good MS product! >.< my company uses it internally as we get it at no extra cost as part of our enterprise dealings with MS

I'm not sure about the others, but another good thing about Sophos is that it can cover MAC, Linux & UNIX too.
Many solutions are Windows only.

Used to use ESET NOD32 at my last job, very good AV.
Currently use Panda (existing product), and its all kinds of shocking.

The only thing I'd say about Sophos it that it can be a tad heavy on the client end resources. I've used ESET which I quite liked although policy management could be a bit better. I've heard very good things about MS Forefront though.
