I have a limited budget of £150 and want to upgrade my CPU and GPU. I have decided on the following as the best option:

Sell existing CPU (Core Duo 2 E6750) for £55
Sell existing GPU (8800GTX) for £50

Buy second hand CPU (Core Duo 2 E8500) for £110
Buy new GPU (ATI 5770) for £120

Net Outlay of £125

I would replace 5770 with the new ATI 5830 if they are priced at circa £150

Would this be the best use of my funds in terms of overall performance gains - mainly gaming at 1920x1600; looking forward to Bad Company 2 and Aliens v Predator.

Would I be better off keeping my E6750 and spending all my cash on a GPU - say a ATI 5850 when they drop down in price to say £200. Before anyone else asks I have had no success in overclocking the E6750. Using a Gigabyte P35C-DSR3 board and have all memory slots filled with OCZ Gold Edition DDR2 PC6400 (2x1GB and 2x2GB).

Cheers

Not much gain going to the E8500 afaik. I know you're limited by the 775 socket but £55 to up it for a slightly better E8 doesn't seem worth it.

Your unusual ram setup may be contributing to the lack of OC on the E6750. You need all 6GB? Try taking the 2x1Gb's out and attempting to clock it again.

I think you'd be better off pumping the full budget into GFX which gives you ~£200 to play with. 5830 easily and at a stretch you could have a 5850.

Agree with the above poster, spend the money on gfx card u'll notice more of a difference, recommend 5850. He may also be right about the RAM as u should be able to get at least 3.2GHz out of that CPU on that board (i got 3.2 from an E2180 and 3.5 from a Q6600 on a P35 DS3R with OCZ Gold Edition DDR2 PC8500 2x2GB).
