best CPU for 3D rendering?

I'd personally say get a AM2 Dual core with a cheap mobo for now.
Then near the end of the year, or early next year, iirc, get a 4x4 mobo and a second dual core.
Doesnt matter what Conroe does, a 4 core system will blitz through 3d rendering.

The Apple option was good, but you know Apple are gonna charge you a v.large premium for their new MacPro's.

My advice is not to spend anything ! That grass scene really does need serious changes to the render settings. As I said in an earlier post, I set up a very similar scene and it takes under a minute without GI on a x2 3800 in Cinema4D with the Hair module. Have a very close look at the accuracy of the GI being used and also check that you haven't got insane levels of antialiasing selected.

The hair solution in 3dsmax is based on "Shave and a Haircut" by www.joealter.com and it can render hair/fur/grass/etc very quickly. I don't think for a minute it's the grass that is the root (ha ha) of the slowness.

It's easy to spend other peoples money but a x2 system could be knocked up pretty cheaply - Remember though, this won't yield a magic cure for 4 hour renders. With a bit of work I'm convinced that his P4 system could be given a new lease of life though.

There's little point getting a Mac as 3dsmax doesn't run on it. It may not even run 100% via Bootcamp - You would have to ask on a more specific 3D forum to see if there are any issues.

some stuff i made in studio max takes hours to render as well, but i think a model/scene with enough detail will cripple any CPU, regardless, why you think movie studios have rendering computers, doing nothing but rendereing, so best CPU for rendering IMO is a 8-way dual core opteron system with as much RAM as you can get your hands on and a pair of 7950G2Xs

Edit: helping friends modify X3: reunion with its stonkingly brilliant engine :D

I'm unsure if dual Xeon means that it will have two cores or two (dual core) CPUs as there aren't any single core Woodcrest Xeons. EDIT: It is two processors (quad core). I'm wicked-happy. :D

That $2,400 price tag converts to 1,267 Pounds Sterling.

The case looks nearly identical except now it has dual SuperDrives.

EDIT: UK Price for model pictured above is £1,445.96 (£1,699.00 with VAT. They ship in 3-5 days and postage is free.

With the price of multi CPU machines its cheaper and more effective to put together 3 or 4 cheaper basic machines and network them. Well at least it used to be, I'm well out of that business these days.
