Best CPU for approx £150 please?

It's a close call between i5 750 and Phenom X4 965 with both at stock settings, even though there's an 700Mhz difference in clockspeed performance will be similar.

If you plan to overclock though it's a no brainer, i5 750 all the way.

i5 750 at £150 price point. It's generally slightly better than the 955/965BE at gaming, and once overclocked is very good.

You can drop a Six Core CPU in the AM3 board though... something which gives a great future upgrade path... rather than the intel which requires i7 to have six core support.

I would go with the 555 and risk it unlocking but I'm a chance kind of guy... and would be willing to pop it on the popular auction site and upgrade it later on if it didn't!

DSR? Test it & if it doesn't unlock send it back? :p

How much are the 6 cores expected to be when released? Sure, you could upgrade it to a 6 core eventually with the same board but would it be worth it ?

Bulldozer is also appearing in AMD's roadmaps for AM3 - http://phx.corporate-ir.net/External.File?item=UGFyZW50SUQ9MjAzMjR8Q2hpbGRJRD0tMXxUeXBlPTM=&t=1.

That's a completely new CPU architecture redesign - potentially a big performance jump if they get it right. Assuming Bulldozer is available with a reasonable TDP you might be able to drop it into existing AM3 motherboards with just a BIOS update.

6 Core is also confirmed (I believe) for AM2+ boards with DDR2.

AM2+ and AM3 are starting to look like the new 775. I'm not predicting that Bulldozer is going to be a Core 2 like jump but if it is, a lot of existing AMD users will be laughing.

Edit: To be sure - the 750 is the best CPU for £150 now. AMD is fair enough if you're spending less. I'm sure i5 boards will offer significan't upgrades too. Intel just hasn't spelled it out as much as AMD at this stage.

Porn playback is better with Intel Inside.

Just kidding but comparing dual core Phenom with Core i5 is imo pointless. Many games are utilizing 3 or more cores these days.

Narrow it down to Core i5 750 and Phenom II 955 (clocks better than 965 as far as I'm concerned).

I didn't get that memo ;)

Hey there's a difference to someone buying a dual-core for gaming than someone KEEPING a dual-core that they already own. I'm not saying quad-core is essential to play games but it's not worth saving £70 on when someone is building a £500-800 PC in 2010.

sorry? . . . where exactly did Shrapnel mention he was spending "£500-800"

I just mean in general. The £500-800 comes from the spec. me threads on here. That seems to be what most people spend on a gaming PC. I don't think it's worth saving money with buying a dual-core. If the dual was £70 and the quad was £300 then it would still be a luxury, but that's not the case. I'm all for sticking to a sensible budget and not just throwing money at it, that's why I still have the GTX 260.
