Best CPU

The pentium D's are the best you'll get in there.

Good luck finding one for a good price though. You'd be better saving a little more and getting a new system if im honest.

i'm buy a complete i7 system in a few weeks - however i'd like to increase the performance of this for my son.

PENTIUM D - 915 - 2.8GHz - LGA775
DUAL CORE 4MB CACHE
C1 STEPPING
800MHz FSB

would that fit alright?

It's possible it will need updating yes. I'd be updating it to the latest version just so that it is guaranteed to work. It'll be easier than try it without and finding that it does need to be updated.

Download/read the motherboard manual. This should tell you how to update the BIOS. Dont update it via windows software though, as this is the most risky. Stick to updating via bootable media (floppy, CD, flash)
