best cross-os messenger?

Whats the best messenger app to use, that works across different OS's?

At the moment im thinking of using Whatsapp (new phone comes tomorrow)

but are there any other apps that are better or more reliable? Any that support sending photos/videos? I know Whatsapp can do this.

Whatsapp if only because pretty much everyone who has a smartphone uses it so it's much less hassle than something that requires yet another account and adding people to yet another contacts list.

Agreed. I send maybe 5 text a week as everyone I know pretty much has whatsapp.

I like whatsapp because it works off phone numbers so there's no need to go around getting peoples users names or any of that crap.
