Hey there

Well I am in the process of trying to find the best components to upgrade my PC for gaming and it is a 939 board with only DDR1 Ram slots available so I want to know what is the best 2GB Ram to buy for gaming. The computer is going to have an Athlon X2 3800+ (2.0GHz x2, 1MB L2 Cache) and a ATI HD3850 512MB graphics card (as the board has a PCI-Express X16 slot available). I am gonna be playing pretty much all the modern and upcoming games aswell. Any recommendations on the 2GB DDR Ram are much appreciated.

Thanks for your help and time.

You might be lucky and find yourself some decent PC-4000 memory (500MHz)

In which case, you'll be able to overclock your system and squeeze some extra juice from the system or just run the memory asycronously with a 4:5 divider .

I run the G.Skill HZ PC4000 Ram with my X2 3800+. Under water I can get a max OC of 2.9Ghz from the CPU. :D (2.85Ghz stable).

The HZ Ram is quality stuff if you can find it and there are plenty of reviews of the stuff. :) Currently running mine on a divider so it's let me tighten up the timings.

Well, I don't really know anything about overclocking my CPU and Ram as I have never done it before and don't know if I will actually be trying it when I upgrade as I alway feels its too risky and my comp will end up blowing up or something lol.

be warned, DDR1 performance ram is damn expensive these days. Trying to get an extra 2gig of OCZ platinum ram and its up to £72 on a popular auction site.

Running the same stuff myself. I have 2GB and would love to get another 2. Running it at 3-3-3-8-1T at 240 2.6v. Looking to tighten up the timings on mine too. What sort of speeds/timings are you getting?

On another note - has anyone mixed different rated memory from the same manufacturer? I haven't been able to find any of the Gskill DDR500 kits but have spotted some of the DDR400 stuff. Would these run together on a divider if I loosened the timings for the DDR400 stuff?

Best you will find I think is the Corsair twinx-3200xl, runs at 2-2-2-5 very good ram if you can find it, but it may still be expensive even second hand.

im currently mixing some twinmoss on twinmoss pc3200 (the old stuff from the not dual channel compatible batches) with some balistix pc4000 - working dual channel with 1 stick balistix paired with 1 stick twinmos on each channel.

so you should be fine.
