Been looking at the best options for the cheapest upgrade for the moment.
for the rig that I have.

I have decided to make the most of what I have and buy a new rig end of this year...

In the mean time I want to utilize my E6600 Intel Duo processor and unleash the bottle neck of DDR2 that the Asus P5Q-pro uses...by upgrading to a DDR3 board...

and in this way the my ATI 5830 GFX and HD's will also work faster as well

Yes I know it is not the best processor and GFX in the world but I don't have enough money to upgrade to the i5 2500 & board and memory that I want at the moment... also there is no point in buying a better GFX now just for it be outclassed by the i5 when I buy it later this year..

I have just swapped to 64bit Win 7 from 32 bit and got to say this has made a huge inprovement....

One of the reasons for doing it this way is the memory is at a lowish price so thought I could get 8GB now of DDR3 and know that I can put it in the my new rig at the end of the year....by buying DDR2 at the moment to upgrade it is over priced and also redundant when I upgrade..

There's an P5Q3 that takes DDR3. Not sure changing your mobo is going to remove the bottleneck of which you speak though as the performance increase from going to DDR3 is only going to be a few percent at best. The fact that you're using a 5 and half year old CPU is likely why your system seems slow etc. Your best bet is to just save until you can afford a full upgrade to a new platform.

Performance deference between DDR2 & 3 when combined with a C2D system is negligibly small, if not even slower than DDR2!(DDR2 has faster timings most of the time)
But price of the DDR3 is ata sweet spot for some time now so for 8GB, DDR3 seems like a good "value".

Your system will benefit more, by putting in a C2Q like Q6600 and overclocking it to 3.2-3.4GHz.

I have "Upgraded" my second PC from a E5400(3.4GHz) to a Q6600(3.2GHz) and games ike BFBC2 does show the power of 4 cores!
I have also changed the 2 GB DDR2 ram and installed 4GB DDR3 on that PCs motherboard(GA-P35C-DS3R) but have seen all benchmarks getting lower scores!

I have been looking at the Quad range of cpu's that fit my board as this was my first choice but they all seem to be going for mega money....several have been listed fo some £300-400 ......also they later DDR3 boards are more based towards the 64 bits system I believe all correct me if I am wrong....

Thanks for the advice though....

On the popular auction sites you can get a Q6600 used for £45 and up. I bought one a couple of weeks ago to upgrade a second pc. That was from a c2d with 4gb ram, I also upgraded the memory to 8gb at the same time. The difference in most things has been very noticeable and well worth it.

Clocks to 3.2ghz stable but will go a lot higher with just two sticks of ram instead of having 4 in.

I was thinking along the same lines as you and there doesn't seem to be too many options. All I could find were a couple of boards by Asus that would handle DDR3.

Yeh, no point in DDR3 on older 775 boards in my opinion. The platform was designed for DDR2 and DDR3 support was an afterthought at the end of the product cycle. A far better upgrade would be a second hand Q6600 / Q9550.

Well some interesting facts and overclocking my board is what I want to do. The last time I did any over clocking it was get this: A Celeron 300 ghz to 450ghz way way back...was epic at the time....

Ok guys on the lookout for a Q6600 or higher if any one has any for sale....
