Best Device of 2015

Erm, yes. Don't take them away and you've got a better device. That's all I was saying. Drop down to S6 size and I would probably lean towards the G4.

Definitely screen/device size is a personal preference.

I'm just saying your logic makes no sense to me. I don't understand why a note 5 would top your pile, but an S6 which is basically a smaller Note 5 without the S-pen falls right down the rankings.

I've not owned a G4 (or even used one), but I know it's a popular choice because the camera is up there and it can be had for a decent price. I guess my argument can be summed up most by comparing where you'll lose out more by moving from a Note 5 to a G4, vs from a Note 5 vs S6.

From Note 5 to S6
  • Smaller battery
  • No S-Pen
  • 1GB less RAM

From Note 5 to G4
  • No S-Pen
  • 1GB less RAM
  • Slower SoC
  • No AMOLED screen
  • Worse camera (going by DxOMark, real world? Probably not a lot in it)
  • No MST
  • No Mobeam
  • Only Gorilla Glass 3

The software experience on the S6 & Note 5 is also going to be pretty much identical apart from the S-Pen support.

Can't remember, but one of the big review sites has done a 2015 showdown

from memory

Nexus 6P
Samsung S6
Nexus 5X
LG G4
iPhone 6S

can't remember the others

'Right down the rankings'? 4th? Do you know how many phones there are out there? Mind you, I really don't want to use a screen that small tbh. Maybe it does drop further.

Performance of G4 was great, definitely no issues there. Liked some of their little software additions. Amazing camera, better than Note 5 and S6 in my opinion. Unreal battery life, not seen another phone like it.

Mobeam... erm, what? I don't think I've ever seen it mentioned until now.

So, if I can't have a Note 5, yes, I would go for the G4. I'm looking to try a V10, that should be a pretty great device too.

In that order? That sounds a little odd to have the 5X in there? No Note 5? I wonder what their justification was?

Of course I can appreciate how many phones there are out there. Please don't be condescending, there really isn't any need. You asked for opinions, I gave mine and backed it up with precise reasons.

Are you questioning what Mobeam is, or why I believe it's important? If it's the former, it's technology that I believe is only found in Samsung phones since the ~Note4 that uses the proximity sensor to mimic barcodes. I find this an extremely useful feature as it has freed a lot of bulk in my wallet by no longer needing to store loyalty cards.

Obviously there are plenty of apps on the Google Play store that will store electronic copies of your cards but they won't usually scan at checkout due to the reflectivity of the screen and/or the backlight being too strong.

Damn, I was going more for sarcasm I think. Sorry.

I'd just never heard of Mobeam before was all.

All I have said is the Note 5 is an upgraded S6, which would mean logically the S6 wouldn't be the best phone of 2015 if we're looking objectively.

Of course it's different if we're asking for personal favourites and it's often hard to separate the two when making a decision. I personally would put an iPhone of any kind way down the list for my personal choice, but I can understand it has qualities that make it a good device and why some would say it's the best.

There's also the 'best value' and outright 'best' which can often cloud things too.

No worries, it's hard to convey context in written form.

I think any flag ship Samsung device released this year has things nailed on the hardware size, not that you would expect anything different from Samsung. Also, does anyone know how the adopted storage work in Marshmallow? Does it slow memory performance to the SD card speeds?

I had a play with some of the Hauwei devices when I was over in Berlin recently and their build quality and features impressed me. I probably wouldn't have even bothered checking out their stand if it wasn't for the fact I know they built the Nexus 6P. What's their flagship device aside from the 6P?

The 5X is amazing, one of the best cameras of 2015, stock android, a fingerprint scanner which works every time. It's pretty much like the 6p only smaller, with an 808 chip rather than the 810 (oh and ips over oled which is shame). There was some initial software niggles but 6.0.1 and a factory reset sorted it.

In fact, I actually bought one and gave the s6 to the mrs.

The amount of people who still go by specs rather than owning them and actually doing a proper side by side comparison is alarming. Granted, not everyone can afford to swap phones often but photos when viewed on a high end monitor the 5x easily holds its own against the s6 and g4.

Perhaps the £299 price makes people think it can't be as good as a £600 phone

It's like when people moan about touchwiz slowing it down and making it buggy. The s6 was the most reliable and lag free android phone I have ever owned. In fact within the four months I owned it, I don't believe it force closed on me once, or showed ANY lag.

Can't remember if the Note 5 was top 10, or top 20 but I'm certain it was in there

I'd owned the s6 and 5x. I'd pick the s6 every time. The build quality on the 5x was utter trash. The OS was fine. Just the quality of the plastic wasn't up to scratch. Other than that, great handset.

Yeah, great phone, I personally wouldn't have it in a top 5. It does seem to be a little marmite from it owners. Some love it, some hate it.

I wouldn't say there's anything, maybe aside regular OS updates... and maybe the fingerprint scanner, it does better than the Note 5, LG G4, S6 or 6P just off the top of my head.

Everyone's entitled to their opinions of course :) The main thing is as long as you're happy.

Best budget or performance to price ratio phone: Xiaomi redmi note 3.

Best phone: I am not sure, I have not been happy with most.

Over rated phone: Oneplus 2. The performance is ****, software is ****. Hardware (maybe not the SD810) is excellent.

Average phone that I owned this year: Galaxy S6. Terrible battery eating bugs in the early days made me give up on it. They fixed that but the battery life is still hardly amazing for a "flagship phone".

Like a previous post stated... hopefully manufacturers have given up on the slim phone + small battery combination.

Not sure if the Huawei mate 8 counts as a 2015 phone since it only released in China this year. But I'd guess that has a chance at 2015 phone of the year.

Well my hoping they don't cancels yours out I think :p I realised one of the things I don't like about the Redmi Note 3 is it feels a little 'thick'. I know in reality it's only 1mm thicker than my Note 5, but it feels like more :(

Gotta new G4 leather brown Sim free incoming at £270, just couldn't pass up the value for money with the specs. That and the battery/no sd card thing has disappointed me with the S6, after happily owning s2, s3, note 3. Picked up two spare battery kits for £40 combined will result in going from 0 to 100 being a cinch.

Where can the G4 be had for that price? Cheapest I can see is £310 having a quick look around.

Cheers :)
