Hi All

I have WinXP DNS Client enabled plus Firefox cache set to DNS Cache Expiration 3600 (1hour) and DNS Cache Entries 50.

If I disable one or both caches, I don't notice much/any difference in speed (although not sure how to properly test cache resolving speed).

Do you recommend I use WinXP and Firefox DNS cache or just use one, if so which?

What setup is best in theory?

I would appreciate your advice.

Hi

If you cannot give advice, I would still be interested to know how your DNS Cache is setup and how you decided to set it up that way?

Any comments appreciated

Hi tolien

Thanks for replying.

Can you remind me what the defaults are in WinXP and Firefox please?

Thanks

Hi tolien

I just disabled/enabled the local service DNS Client.

Currently running with DNS Client disabled and Firefox cache expiration and Cache entries set to 0.

Therefore using the DNS servers setup under TCP/IP properties and so far it feels a little bit quicker (not that it was slow before).

I was just interested in how others had their DNS servers set up and what in theory would give the fastest response.

Do you have a view?

If you're not caching anything, and going out to your ISP's DNS servers every time, it'll almost certainly be slower (though whether that's noticeable will depend on how fast they answer, how far away they are, etc.).
