Best drive setup? A good non-SSD?

I was going to go for a 512gb Samsung 850 Pro. I know the Evos are cheaper, but they are slower and have issues and ain't nobody got time for that. Firmware updates or hardware faults etc.

But the 512mb is obviously a small chunk of monkey. £270-300. I'm thinking maybe it would be better to grab the 256gb and then get a 3-4TB drive to compliment it. Sadly I won't be able to fit as many games on the SSD but 512GB isn't really enough space by itself anyway.

What's a good mechanical drive? I want speed and reliability (so basically everything) I don't mind sacrificing storage space for better quality... You don't really hear much about mechanical drives anymore, reviews are all SSD SSD.

I don't trust Seagate btw. Of all the drives I have owned, the only ones to have failed have been Seagates. One in particular doing so in spectacular fashion (burning out one of its chips and melting the rubber sleeve that was around it-causing a very bad smell that took ages to go away long after the drive had been removed).

That's what I do, ssd for windows/apps/main games and a Seagate 7200.14 for steam/media.

There's just no point putting a huge steam library of unplayed games on expensive SSD space.

I went for a 256gb 850 pro and a 1tb VelociRaptor in the end :)

I could get 4Tb for cheaper but I don't *need* that much space and I'd rather have the best performance out of the space I do have instead. Should fit a lot of STEAM games on that 1TB :)

I just upgraded to a SSD for OS/main progs and moved my former boot drive a WD Black to storage and boy am I happy with the write speeds going on to that WD Black now, averages about 135MB's which is x4 what I was getting writing to a WD Green previously.
