Best DRM in a Game yet ?

I liked FADE in ARMA most. Start off by making your weapons inaccurate, then stops you using vehicles, then (apparently) turns you into a bird.

that is amazing, although i expect there will be an increase in pirated copies just so people can mess with the invincible scorpion :p

one thing i would like to know is, how hard would it be to mod that thing out of the game, making the anti piracy method completely useless

Probably not that hard as even fairly complicated DRM systems have been hacked by 3-4 days after release of the game tops.

Batman AA had similiar ingame anti-piracy measures which was annoying as I once tripped them with a fully legal copy of the game when DRM failed to work properly during one session - fortunatly after googling it, realising it was a DRM issue rather than a game design one and then restarting my PC it all worked again after that.

as already said it must be quite easy to remove

But nobody appears to have done it yet. Of all the torrents kicking about boasting a crack, not a single one mentions that they've managed to remove the scorpion yet :D

Perhaps the cracks do work.

But something in the game is designed to recognise its been cracked but not stop you at an obvious point say... the install which could be more easily analysed by a hacker but instead, let you play and at random spawns a scorpion with the other mobs.

Probably be quite hard to find out what's causing a particular mob to spawn and go after you.

My speculation ofc.

There was a japanese game years ago that let you play the entire game if it was pirated. We'll nearly the entire game.

Legit buyers booted the game and started playing. Pirates booted the game and got an anti piracy screen. Then when you got to the final boss the game rebooted and wiped all your saves.

Game breaking ones are always the best because it also helps the devs track people using it on the forums when the come in to ask about it lol

Probably not terribly hard, but I'd say this is more about the lols when people inevitably start whining on forums about the damn scorpion and how the game's too hard :D

You could really annoy people by having it appear to get injured, even defeated for a short while, before popping back up an coming for you again.

Earthbound.

The one issue with DRM such as this is what Rroff mentions, what happens if it hits a legit buyer? What do you do then? He goes onto a forum asking for help with the problem, everyone just goes 'lol, pirate' and he doesn't get any help with a game he bought. The same issue with all DRM systems, it needs to be invisible to people who bought the game legally.
Still, this is pretty awesome :D

One of the first PC games (1985) to use 'novel' copy protection.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternate_Reality_(computer_game)

Read under technology: 'The program disks could be copied though the standard methods and the copy would appear to work. However not long after the player began the game, their character would become weaker and weaker and then die from an apparent disease. The Dungeon, if loaded with a pirated copy, featured two "FBI agents" as encounters during the beginning of the game, who attacked with "the long arm of the law". The two agents were overly powerful and unbeatable, so as to kill the character before being able to play the game.'
