I'm looking to get a 4k TV as I currently have a very basic non-hd TV. I use it for my Xbox One S for gaming, YouTube and browser based TV shows and movies.

I am going to be upgrading to the PlayStation 5/Xbox X in November so I want to get the best quality that I can but I only have a budget of around £500.

I know I'm not going to get amazing results but I want to get the best results for what I have.

Any good recommendations? I was thinking maybe a 49 inch lg OLED TV is my best option or the Samsung QLED?

Many thanks!

OLED is well outside of your £500 budget unless you're talking second-hand. There's also a problem of size. Up until this year, the smallest OLEDs have been 55". There is a new size coming. It's 48". But don't expect this to start competing with budget / entry-level LCD TVs. LG's 48" version will be (or is) £1500.

Samsung's QLED is just about inside your budget for their entry level Q60R. This isn't the same spec as the higher models though. For example, the Q60R panel doesn't have the zones of local dimming (it's edge lit) and there are other differences too. However, in game mode this £500 TV does have a low lag time of just under 17ms.

RTings has a useful round-up of TV sets measured for lag in various modes. The site is US-centric, so not all of the models are available here. However, there is some overlap between the US and the UK so it's still a very useful resource. [make sure you click to expand the selection beyond the 15 shown on the first screen] https://www.rtings.com/tv/tests/inputs/input-lag

If you say you have a budget of £500 now and will be getting a new games console , which won’t be out for another 4 months ,I’d save your pennies and build your budget. Buy a tv when you get the console.

Do you want to make use of 120Hz 4K / VRR gaming on the new consoles? If so then your options become limited and you should carefully look at the TVs specifications.

HDMI 2.1 is NOT a guarantee of 120Hz 4K compatibility for example.

Unfortunately this is the most I can afford until the middle of next year, I'm not expecting perfection just a 4k TV I can console game on without unplayable stuttering or tearing. I've currently got a 10 year old standard definition so anything is an improvement!

What about either;
Samsung UE55RU7300 55" Curved
or
LG 55UM7050PLC 55" ?

LG's NanoCell SM8500 worth a shout as well for £470 if you search it

Can't link as retailer's name is blocked lol

I think that's going to be a bit of a hell of a stretch with a £500 budget. That's asking for champagne features with a beer budget. Many/all the TVs will have 50/60Hz panels.

Maybe a smaller dedicated gaming monitor is more the answer and keep the old TV just for watching telly?

Yeah you won't even get proper HDR for £500, TV's in that price range might support and advertise it but their panels won't get anywhere near bright enough to make it look as its intended and they will probably have 8bit panels as well.

I would have said TALON1973's advice was the best but if you're absolutely adament £500 is the limit you're going to have to make some sacrifices unless you find something good in the second hand market. Coming from a 10 year old SDTV though almost anything should seem like a massive upgrade.

Thanks for the help guys, really appreciated, I've kinda settled on the;

Samsung UE55RU7300 55" Curved Smart 4K Ultra HD TV with HDR10+

I have seen a lot of reviews and YouTube videos of people playing consoles on absolutely fine with good frame rates and no tearing.

I hadn't really considered a monitor instead, but I think I'd rather have a larger screen and the TV I have is on the way out anyway I'll only have to get both sooner or later.

What about you go to rtings dot com and read the reviews?

Because they focus on tv and films more, I’d rather have the opinion of actual gamers. That’s why we are all on these forums bud.

I think the point some of us have been trying to make is that you're asking for the sort of information that might be in reviews for high-performance TVs, but with a budget for entry-level tellies.

It's not unreasonable of you to ask, but I think you're going to have to accept that these sort of indepth gaming-centred reviews don't happen on all the cheap tellies.

The best you're probably going to get is whether or not a TV has gaming mode and, if you're lucky, a measure of the lag in milliseconds. That's why we've been pointing you to rtings. The site is about tye best there is at rounding up a fairly big range of TVs and giving some objective review data based on real measurements rather than some gamer's very subjective review of the TV they've just bought where - either consciously or unconsciously - their opinion is likely to be biased.

If you really can’t stretch your budget , I’d go 2nd hand . You won’t get what your after at £500.

I’ve gone from a £400 4k lcd tv in 2016 to a 4k oled in 2019. Big difference. £1000 price difference mind lol. But IF you get lucky 2nd hand it’s worth it.

if your credit is good I’d consider going buy now pay later. It will give you more options assuming you can pay it off inside 12 months.

Panasonics aren't on ratings that's always a problem - for the poor americans too, having to import pan oled's from canada if they must have the best -,
but the panasonic ebay recon store rests a favourite, can get a 50gx800<£600 , unfortunately not a 100hz panel though, with the decline of 3d the manufacturers justified removing those until you hit to £900.

wrong

they focus on everything. that is the point of their websites. they even give scores for gaming and HDR gaming separately and they also have a section specifically for the best gaming tvs available.

the people on these forums aren't professional calibrators or tv reviewers who know every aspect of the tv and have written and published a full report including motion control and input lag.

since you seem to be so lazy and cannot use google here's a link

Update 06/12/2020: The B9 is now compatible with recent NVIDIA G-SYNC graphics cards, and is officially certified as G-SYNC compatible. We tested the VRR input lag, as we're now able to test this accurately with our RTX 2070.

This TV has a remarkably low input lag as long as you are in 'Game' mode. It's much better than last year's B8 and about the same as the C9 and the E9.

The LG B9 now supports an Auto Low Latency Mode to save you the hassle of having to switch to 'Game' mode each time you want to play a game. See our recommended settings for Gaming.

oh look all about gaming in the review as if they knew that was info people would be looking for.
