best ever console game... any format (and why?)

There's a few that I would consider the best, for very different reasons.

ISS Deluxe Snes - The first football game I got into and was amazing at the time and I still think would be a good laugh playing it now.

Actua Soccer PS1 - The first 3D football game that provided hours and hours of mulitplayer fun with beer. "Felipeeeeeeeeeeee!"

ISS Pro PS1 - As above but improved on the realism of actua soccer.

Doom PS1 - Multiplayer on this was immense. 2 TVs, 2 PS1s, 2 copies of the game. Used to play this with mates for hours/days on end.

From then, I moved into PC games and only really moved back to consoles with the Xbox 360 and thus the rest of my choices are from the 360, though they are on the PS3 too obviously.

Bioshock - Utterly epic game that I've played through 3 times and enjoyed each time. Visuals, sound, atmosphere and story all stunning.

Dead Space - Same as above really, another fantastic game I've played through 3 times and to think I didn't like it that much when I first played it.

Fallout 3 - Hard to choose between this and Oblivion but the post apocalyptic setting just wins. Amazing game with an enoumous amount of depth and so much to do which never ever got boring.

God Of War 2 - PS2.

I know it's a bit new, but I was blown away when I played it. I hadn't completed a game in years when I picked this up and I couldn't put it down. Sublime.

Honourable mentions:
Super Mario World - SNES
Goldeneye - N64
Mario Galaxy - Wii
Halo - Xbox
Gran Turismo - PSX
Virtua Fighter 3tb - DC
Virtua Fighter 4 - PS2
Twisted Metal: Black - PS2
SSX Tricky - PS2

My vote goes to Tomb Raider 1 - PS1. This is still the best in the series by far imo. An absolute classic game. I know that it was released on PC, but most probably played the console versions.

GTA3 on the PlayStation 2. I wrote up a really long post that went into details, I was about to proof read it before I posted, I left the room for a cuppa, came back and somebody had been playing on my lappy and it's gooone. :(

GTA3 was a really important game. I was a student at the time and working in a high street purple game store. This literally made PS2s fly off of the shelf. We'd get a delivery of 50 copies a day and sell every one by lunch time. It was crazy.

For me, the best game ever needs to be one that does something really special. Something ground breaking.

Super Mario world for the snes for example, was an amazing game, but it only added better graphics from its NES predecessors.

Goldeneye for n64, again amazing game, and actually it was the first game if I remember correctly to have enemies realistically react to being shot (and I dont know why games today dont do this).

Zelda: Ocarina of Time was simply superb, but not ground breaking.

There is one game that I think broke the boundaries and was the start of all our current 3d games - mario 64 for n64.

When that was shown it was something totally new and very exciting. I remember when I first played it, it was like nothing else I had played, even my dad was surprised how interesting it was. From that game, thousands of 3d based games emerged. It wins my vote.

I'm torn between:

Mario 64 (N64)
Golden Eye (N64)
Perfect Dark (N64)
Super Mario World (SNES)
Yoshi's Island (SNES)
Secret of Mana (SNES)
SF2 (arcade)

Each of these games either captured my imagination from start to finish of proved to be utterly and compulsively addictive to play.

There's loads!!

Megadrive - Streets of Rage, Sonic the Hedgehog. Loads of co op with SOR, even got my dad into gaming! Sonic doesn't have to be explained!

PS1 - Silent Hill, Resident Evil. Both scared the bejesus out of me as a kid. I couldn't sleep for weeks! Final Fantasy 8. Great story, characters, everything! Tomb Raider.

PS2 - Zone of the Enders. Had a fantastic story and the mechs were amazing! Kingdom Hearts/2.. Story, graphics, music and characters amazing, it was so immersive.

N64 - Donkey Kong, Zelda: OOT, Mario. Great games, there was so much to see and do.

Vandal Hearts
Suikoden 1 + 2
FF7
Resident Evil 1/2/3 (all great and replayable)

SSX Tricky (gamecube)
Chaos (Spectrum)
Mario Party 5 (Gamecube) - They just about got it right with this one!
Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast)

Its a shame I cant find Chaos anywhere, and have to make do with the dodgy PC remake

Well it has to be Street Fighter 2, originally on my SNES but still used on the Xbox 360. I used to play this all the time in the arcades in Daniels in Windsor. Played with friends on my SNES at friends' houses on the SNES or Mega Drive ( SNES was better ;) ). I had been playing SSF2 on my old Snes over the years.

The Xbox 360 revived it with Hyper Fighting and HD Remix. I just think it is the best games I have ever played and still keeps me entertained 18 years after release.

Blood Omen : Legacy of Kain on Playstation.

I think its by far the best of the Kain series. Fantastic story, great voice acting and probably one of gamings best anti-heroes in Kain. The graphics although 2D were very atmospheric in parts and the sound and music was pretty decent as well.

Im deliberately sticking to console only as I could reel of loads of games from home computers :)

Goldeneye on the N64 :)

Not only still the best ever FPS I've ever played it came during the time where me and all my mates all had the same console and we were all really into our computer games so as a result it was the best multiplayer experience I've ever had

These days I have less mates and yet seem to play games less and less :(

If we are strictly speaking consoles, then what has taken most of my time is the following.

Mario Kart (SNES)
Gran Turismo (PS1)
GTA Vice City (PS2)
SF4 (PS3)
Fifa (360)

Close runner ups
COD4 (PS3)
SF2 (SNES)

The first game I really got into was SWOS on the amiga I loved that and played it loads, The greatest console game of all time thoug was FF7, finished it nigh on 15 times now with the first few play throughs totalling at 100+ hours each,

If we are going off time spent on a game though it has to be WoW,and I classed myself as a casual player played that for around 2500 hours spread out over a good few years
